Elphel camera: Codec for Bayer Raw

New generation of HD cameras like RED, SI2K is using wavelet compression for Bayer pattern Raw from cmos image sensor at ratio 5(6):1. (http://www.cineform.com/technology/CineForm_RAW.htm)

Will be nice to implement wavelet raw compression to Elphel HD network camera (http://wiki.elphel.com/index.php?title=HD_cinema_camera_Development_FAQ). Anybody have information about freeware wavelet codec for Bayer Raw?

there was talk of a modest hack to huffyuv to take bayer input rather than 4:2:2. i believe this would be the nicest way to do it, though you'll never get the same compression ratio, you'll at least maintain higher quality.

i was trying to search for the thread, but looks like it's too old and hard to find :)

(btw, does the RED even exist yet? smacks of overhyped vapourware to me)

I've hacked Mfa quickLZ vfw codec to use bayer filter image as input and changed the prediction algorithm to match the bayer array (nothing fancy), and added some debayer algorithm so it decodes to RGB. It's untested due to lack of material and because right now i'm learning Verilog to get some material from my dev board heh ;)

If you want Opensource wavelet codec, check the Dirac project from BBC, there was some hardware implementation in progress and with the support of BBC it can become quite a standard...
