Playing 720p MKV file problems

I got a 720P MKV file that plays great on my Windows XP Athlon X2 CPU using WMP 11. When I play the same file with mplayer with a Athlon 64 CPU it runs the CPU @ 80% during playback and the audio studders and gets out of sync. Should I get a faster CPU to fix my problem. Any suggestions.

Can you give more details like cpu speed? also you should try other player and filter combinations with your athlon 64.

Try using Media Player Classic or some other DirectShow based player instead of mplayer.
