Any chance to see a h.264 transcoder ?

Hi,

I would like to ask if it would be possible to use a transcoder on h.264 video streams, like it is known from MPG2 video streams. I am afraid that the buildin deblocking features and the new cabac compression of h.264 could make transcoding by just using new quant factors much more complicated or impossible.

Could andybody please enlighten me ?

There's nothing preventing a transcoder. Sure, you have to fully decode your modified stream so that you know the exact pixel values used in prediction, you can't just requantize the coefficients. But that's true of mpeg2 too.

Is H.264 video as "transcodable" as MPEG-2 is?

The way I see "transcoding" is, for example, you have an MPEG-2 video file and want to put it on DvD. Then it's simply a matter of transcoding it to VOB, not encoding it (I think).

I'm just wondering if this process will be very similar with H.264 in EVO and M(2)TS on BD and HD-DvD in the (near) future.

VOB is a container. what you are saying is muxing not transcoding.

Thanks for the comment. Would you know though, as MPEG-2 is to VOB, if it is a simple muxing then from H.264 to EVO/M(2)TS compliant to HD-DvD/BD assuming the correct resolution, range of bitrate, and level, etc or is there a more complicated procedure involved?

Coming from the Brodcasting industriy we use the following terms:

Transmuxing : Demultiplexing a given container with its Elementary Streams, or partially doing it depending on the need (removing something or adding something) and then muxing em back together. Point is: u keep the Elementary Streams "as is" !
Transrating : Adjusting bitrate on a mpegx stream based on adjusting/tightening the quant-matrix.. Can currently be done with typically mpeg2 --> mpeg2
Transcoding: full decode - encode
