I have 2 Ghz CPU and 512MB RAM - is that enugh for playing 720p Hi-Def movies? Whats a good video-codec to play Hi-Def movies with minimal CPU and memory usage?

It depends on how they were encoded, i.e. mpeg2, AVC, VC-1. With your current specs I'd say you would have trouble with smooth HD playback.

2Ghz is meaningless. A P4@2Ghz is far slower than a core2 at the same clock. A HDDVD or Blu-ray at 1080p is very intensive to decode, particulary if encoded with AVC. Without hardware acceleration coreAVC is about the most efficient AVC decoder, but I still don't think will play blu-ray on a 2GHz core2, 720p, no problem.
BTW this is the wrong forum, this is for authoring, not playing.

Here I think that Malick can use "best" simply because speed decoding is an objective measurement.
