If I were to encode the same source with the exact same settings, with the only difference being that one file was encoded with Xvid and the other with x264, would there be a difference? Does one clearly look better than the other? Thank you.

xvid and x264 have completely different settings. however x264 should provide a better quality in almost any cases.

Cool. With that said though, I tried downloading an x264 codec, but quite frankly, I couldn't understand at all how to install it. It seemed like a command line exe or something. Did I get the right file?

You need a VfW x264 version to make it work in GK
The version from this site should work

It does work, and quite well, although I haven't had any luck with x264 and IVTC within Gordian Knot.

b-frames and threads have huge problems but it almost works.

Thank you very much. I'm going to test it right now.

Well, the codec installed fine and everything "seems" to be there, but I'm having a problem. I configured the codec and now, I'm basically trying to encode a video, like I did with Xvid. Anyway, whenever I try to encode, I keep getting the same error:
VirtualDub Error
Cannot start video compression:
An unknown error occurred (may be corrupt data).
(error code -100)
Any ideas? Thank you.

You need a VfW x264 version to make it work in GK
agkp (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=117883) allows to use x264.exe inside GK.

Are you attempting to use IVTC with x264 withing Gordian Knot? Yours is the same error I receive when I tried.

I tried IVTC, yes, but also no IVTC and got the same error.

On Gordian Knot, click the Options tab, then click the X264 first pass button and click Ok, then repeat for second pass button. This sets the path for the statsfile. It should then work for normal use, but I don't believe it'll work with IVTC, and there's no real support.

There's a reason if x264 VFW was dropped and there are so many GUIs that support the x264 CLI...

A bit off topic but do you know any x264 CLI GUI's that don't need the MS .NET framework to run? (I know MeGui and AutoMKV both need .NET and I don't like .NET or these GUI's)
Some sort of AutoGK or "new GK" for x264 CLI would be great :)

well, it sounds like prejudice... why dont you "like" .NET?
it's not some sort of evil thing that hides and creeps into your OS...

.NET programs seem to be slower on my old PC also I've had problems with crashes and had to re-install it a few times.
AutoGK or GK never crashed on me on 100+ encodings so my personal experience with these apps is a lot better than with .NET apps.
Maybe I should try Nero (not a fan of it) but at least I guess it doesn't need .NET to run to make a H.264 based encode
