how to convert mpeg to avi ..please help

Friends,
Please help me. I have spent last 3-4 hours searching for a free software that allows you to convert mpeg to avi format.

I have tried virtual dub,but its complaining about VFW codec, i tried downloading it but no use...

I want to play the mpeg file in virtual dub,and to do that i have to convert it to avi..and i am not able to do so...please please help...

If its complaining about a lack of a VfW codec you should just enable MPEG-2 decoding in FFDShow...

It depends on what kind of MPEG it is. What kind is it, MPEG1, MPEG2, or MPEG4? Open it in GSpot and post the screenshot.

Not sure why you're going through this trouble. Why do you want to convert it, go through the time and quality loss, when you can just play this "mpeg file" in another player? Mpeg has more support than any other.

As well, keep in mind. "Avi" is a container for video formats, not a format itself. These could be in the format of DivX, Xvid and others to name a few, or even lossless codecs. You would need to install these codecs first to convert to these formats. Once installed, they should show up in the VFW list for you to convert.

You are asking to convert one beverage to a glass. Avi is like a glass which holds beverages like DivX, Xvid, etc.

Actually i bought this software called WinAvi and it works like a charm. It converts the mpeg ( it does not shows 1,2 or 4) to AVI and the picture quality is also very good.
