View Full Version : when 9.5Gigs fits on a 4.7 Gig DVD

I copied two TV shows on a DVD+R using a panasonic DVD recorder. My understanding is that the DVD+R will hold a max of 4.7Gig of stuff.

Yet on my PC it shows that the total file size on the DVD+R is close to 9.5 Gig! And when I copy the files from the DVD to my hard drive, the files also take up 9.5 Gig of space. And if I make an ISO file from the files, the ISO is over 9Gig.

My goal here was just to make a copy of the DVD because some of the files were corrupt and I wanted an error free copy. But Nero will not let me copy this disk..well at least not on to one single 4.7 gig DVD.

Now I know that this has SOMETHING to do with the fact that the format of the DVD+R is CDFS and the file system of windows is NTFS. But still..shouldn't I be able to duplicate this disk?

Thanks for your help..

Many DVD recorders duplicate the main title PGC. This means that the title can be accessed by two means (although the same VOB cells are played in both cases.) If you import the two titles in a compilation, the VOB files are also duplicated, and the resulting DVD is twice as large than the original. Try to import only one of the titles.

You might want to do a compilation with DVD Shrink in re-author mode too. It is easier to understand what's happening, and to locate the duplicated titles.

Just a stupid question ....

Are you sure it's not a dual layer disc ?

If not, be sure to try r0lZ's idea ! That sounds good !

Goodluck !

EDIT: Nevermind I found this.....

Disk Type number of sectors for data (2,048B each) capacity in bytes capacity in GB capacity in GiB
DVD-R (SL) 2,298,496 4,707,319,808 4.7 4.384
DVD+R (SL) 2,295,104 4,700,372,992 4.7 4.378
DVD-R DL 4,171,712 8,543,666,176 8.5 7.957
DVD+R DL 4,173,824 8,547,991,552 8.5 7.961

Thanks for the info! You are quite right..the DVD+R (definitely single layer) DOES have two sets of VOBS which are bit for bit duplicates. (Though two do not have the same CRC value, which is where the corruption probably came in). I still don't undertand though why i just can't duplicate the DVD without having to reauthor the thing.

As the disc is corrupt, you cannot simply copy it. So, you must extract and copy only parts of the disc. Not sure how you did it in nero, but if you select both files, nero certainly tries to copy them one after each other, and it ends with 2 duplicates.
Copy only the best one, and don't worry.

Now I understand..thanks. The file that got corrupt I think (and which frequently gets corrupt on disks created by the panasonic dvd recorder) is the "menu file" that allows you to choose which recording you want to view. The vobs of the actual two TV recordings appear to be ok.

I was able to copy the DVD using ImgBurn, which created a normal size ISO file, and then allowed me to burn it to a new DVD, with no "reported" errors. However, when I attempt to play the new DVD, the menu is ignored, and the 1st TV recording just starts playing automatically. On a PC, I can get to the 2nd recording manually, but on a desktop player, I would not be able to see the 2nd recording without a menu to choose it. So, yes, as you said, I would have to reauthor this corrupt thing and create a new menu that would enable me to choose one or the other of the two recordings.

Boy..sometimes technology is a drag!

:)

Thanks!
