I found the trick to good quality playback of mpeg4 videos. I enable forced rgb32 output, and resize to 1280 using Lanczos, all on-the-fly, using ffdshow. Now the blacks look black, similar to mpeg2 and DVD playback, instead of grey and washed as found in the yv12 and yuv colorspace during xvid and divx playback. This is the highest quality playback settings I've found and I now watch mpeg4 video with a rekindled perspective on contrast and colors, like a praxis moment.
This works well with media player classic and ffdshow. However, my question is, is there a way to force rgb32 output in mplayer(win32 version)? or how about resizing on the fly.
