im not gonna ask which is best, i just want to get an idear of which tool is a) feature complete b) stable
i have checked the faq here and done a bit of googling - all im after is for the vobs to be decrypted to the hard drive no transcoding or anything like that.
i know i could use wine but to get that working under slackware is a pain in the ass even though i do have buldscripts for the required packages

I used to use dvdbackup. Nowadays I encode to x264-mkv so I just use mplayer -dumpstream.

To rip not ARccOS/RipGuard protected DVDs, DVD Decrypter is still the best. For protected DVDs, DVDFab HD Decrypter is probably a good choice. They are free.

I am still running DVD Decrypter & R4Me with Wine to do the ripping and DVD Rebuilder Pro or Shrink. Here is a link to another thread which shows some of the other stuff I have working pretty good under Wine.

was hoping to replace deamon tools and dvd-decrypter with native linux tools if poss, one little update to your thread - pgcedit works under linux anyway as there is a linux version of it ;)

pgcedit works under linux anyway as there is a linux version of it ;)Right, although it doesn't install the standard way.
BTW, if someone can help me to build the standard packages for Linux, I may try to do it.

while some apps like k9copy, k3b, or or a simple dd do an okay job, windows apps. are still better for dvd stuff and certainly when there's any structure protection present. In that regard wine is a very useful tool.I've found all these progs. work as good or very close as in windows
dvdd, dvdrb, vobblanker, ripit4.., dvdshrink, cce, menushrink, Imgburn, pgcedit(win ver.), dvdremakePro, dvd audio extractor, audio dvd creator, lameXp, DGindex, and I'm sure there's more (dvd, cd related)
The only notable exception for me is dvdsubedit and no preview in dvdrb
As far as PgcEdit (at least for me) if you're using wine i'd stick with the win. ver., the chmod a+x command affected all my .exe's, iirc no more right click/d.click open w/wine (6 months ago can't remember exactly)
The other thing w/pgcedit is while I usually install from terminal I think it's better to install pgcedit from right or d. click. Running after install from terminal is fine
was hoping to replace deamon tools
I've searched alot for something like that but I don't think you'll see anything similar - at least for progs in wine. Mounting iso's and such is very easy in linux but they won't show up as a cdrom drive
There was/is 2 progs called cdemu and kcdemu that may actually work like deamon tools - I don't know - someone is redoing them for Sabayon

not had an issue with pgcedit under linux all i did was chmod 755 on pgcedit, as like you the a+x command i didnt do quite right (was new to linux at the time) and a lot of files were not too good after ;)
as to wine yes i think i may well have to compile that and fontfogre (seems its a wine requirement here) and see how i go from there, last time i tried to run imgburn or dvd decrypter it said it couldnt find the dvd drive, suppose i will have to read up and see whats what

all i did was chmod 755 on pgcedit, as like you the a+x command i didnt do quite rightUsing the properties GUI to tick the executable option should be sufficient. It's what I do after an update.

dvdd and imgburn(write, read, verify) need win. ver. nt4.0 or higher to detect drives
imgburn in build mode must be win98 - I set up an ImgBurn1.exe for builds
Which ver. of wine you use does matter

hard to say without trying. I know 0.9.41(or .40) broke ImgBurn completely
0.9.39 should be good I've locked my main pc at 0.9.35
I think a good guideline for wine is if it's not broke don't upgrade
i have a test box if you want I'll try 0.9.4x just say so

i would certainly take what I see about .44 with a grain of salt seeing as I'm running it as an upgrade with an existing customized system32 and no changes in winecfg
I checked 5 progs. - dvdd, dvdrb, pgcedit, imgburn and dgindex
All opened fine and dvdd worked okay (the info box was somewhat garbled)
The problem with the other 4 was they couldn't browse into a ripped folder
For example i ripped The Fountain in file mode to drive_c but while all 4 progs. can browse to the folder The Fountain they can't see the video_ts inside. On the other hand vlc can open and play
Possibly with a fresh install w/ default sys32 andappropriate winecfg settings who knows
If you're only using wine for win. dvd/cd progs. I'd go with an earlier ver.
I rechecked my main pc and it's actually locked at .33 and while I'm sure they've improved and fixed wine since then certainly nothing in regards to the above mentioned progs.
I believe you can dl ver. sources going back quite a ways

Oh, you are looking for a DeCSS program then - I would use RipIt4me. works great, and no problems in opensuse 10.2, except maybe a few tweaks under WINE for it to work....

error parsing ifo and error extracting mpeg are the two erros that im getting - makes no difference if i use vobcopy to rip the disc or dvd decrypter

Maybe you should go back to post #4 and follow link to see if you missed something. Also from that thread in post #6 is another informative link to a thread on digital digest..

I am using dvd decrypter for weird .vob files (i had some that were like ".vob?" and mplayer was confused about it), else i use mplayer to rip (or vobcopy, but mplayer seems to be better than vobcopy)
Btw, the vob files came from a DVD I bought from ama**n... all the other DVDs i bought from there didnt have this problem, so i wondered if anyone over there started to change things.... very annoying to me, i think my once love for DVDs grew to some kind of hate and with those copy protection schemes in new bluray or whatever the name is, i wont get anything else the next ~6 years... >:(
