1080p short movie file please

I'm able to play 1080p trailers on my linux machine well. However, someone told me that the 1080p trailers that apple.com provides to the public isn't a real good 1080p content. If it's true, then I'm not really testing my machine well. Does someone have a sample 1080p H.264 file that I can test?

EDIT: my machine is able to play Elephant Dream without any playback issues.

Here's a raw H.264 stream at 6 megabits within HD-DVD specs (http://tjhsst.edu/~jgarrett/6000_3.h264). You'll have to mux it into a container to play it; its the Elephant's Dream, but at a higher bitrate than the samples on the website I think.

I'm so sorry but I'm a bit confused when you said that I have to "mux it into to a container". I don't know what to do. Please help.

Yeah, I have a slow upload speed so I don't really feel like re-uploading a muxed version. And the overhead might put it over the max file size on that server, which is 500MB. And adding sound would most certainly put it over the max file size.

It means you need a program like YAMB (http://yamb.unite-video.com/YambInstaller-2.0.0.7.exe) to turn it into an mp4 file (or MKVMerge to make an mkv file).

I downloaded the file and directly played it using mplayer. Playback was very smooth too. I'm glad that my machine can still play it well.

Here is what I saw.

Playing my elephants dream 1080p .avi copy, cpu is at 33%-50%

However, playing your copy, cpu is at 93% :D

Yep, the reason why is because apple content on that site is encoded as Baseline profile video. In other words, it barely uses any exciting new h264 features at all ;) HD DVD streams like the one supplied above will use more or less all the important features for this test, so they'll give you a much better representation of how capable your system is.

My problem now is. What if I like to play BluRay movies on my linux htpc but I don't know if it's possible to make backup of the movies that I will buy. Can I make a copy of the movie like the format given on the link above(.h264 extension)? If possible, how do I make a copy?

Check the Decryption forum for information on ripping HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray discs.

Thank you very much again Dark Shikari. Please help me. Maybe you can site some points which will help me to decide. I'm planning to buy a CRT projector that is 1080i capable. Right now, I have a RPTV 48 inch HDTV(WS 48313 model) which is also CRT based. I love the colors. Pictures are lifelike. Like my post earlier above, my htpc is able to play the 1080p trailers without any issues on a 1080 interlaced mode in Linux. It is still very nice. However, will I be missing a lot if I don't buy a projector that is not 1080p capable? I was thinking that I can save a lot of money if I just buy a 1080i capable CRT projector since I'm able to still watch a 1080p material even when output is 1080i.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)
