I wanted to play around with trying to fit some movies on 1.46GB mini DVD-Rs. I just want the main movie, main audio, and one subtitle track. No menus.
Keeping the main 448k AC3 audio (I'm more picky about audio quality than video quality), that only gives you about 1700 kbits/s for the video for the average 100-min movie.
I used to backup movies with CCE, but now I use DVD Shrink because I'm fine with the quality. Still, that's a really low bitrate, so I'm just wondering what ways it could be done.
It'd be easy to get decent quality if I used 352x480 resolution, but I want to keep it in 16x9 format.
I tried some clips in TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress, setting avg. bitrate to 1700, 2-pass VBR, 720x480 MPEG-2 Video, 3:2 pulldown, 23.976 FPS, and it turned out pretty well, but it went and turned the audio from 5.1 AC3 to 2.0 AC3 -- I don't see any way to keep the 5.1.
