Ripping Subtitles Off DVD

Is it possible to rip subtitle streams off a retail dvd into a format that's acceptable in MuxMan? i.e. SUP or SST?

We can, but there are a couple of progs that easily come to mind. DVDSubEdit (see the sticky) and SubRip.

PgcDemux worked great. That did exactly what I wanted.

However, do I need to do anything extra in MuxMan for the subtitles? All the subs I imported had a huge red outline (which were not on the original subs). All I did was import the .sup sub streams that PgcDemux gave me.

You have to modify the color table in the IFO or the indexes in the VOBs.

Use PgcEdit. Double-click on the title PGC, and click on the red box to modify its color. You can also open your original DVD in another instance of PgcEdit, and copy/paste the whole color table.

You can also use DVDSubEdit to modify the color index in the VOBs, but it takes longer.

I must be doing something wrong here. Firstly I tried PgcEdit as you suggested, but I cannot double-click on the title PGC. Each time I click on it it simply brings up the drop-down menu where you select the PGC so I cannot double-click on it. Then I tried in DVDSubEdit changing it from red to yellow and saving it and they're still red.

I find SubtitleCreator a better (and easier) tool to modify colours and even retime/eliminate lines without demuxing/remuxing. Read the manuals that come with it, they are well explained.

In PgcEdit the title PGC is found in the left-hand pane and you can identify it by looking for the line with the same runtime as the movie (it's simple with the Muxman created one because it has a very basic structure and will be TTN 1, Title 1). Double-click this line to bring up the Pgc Editor window.

You can open your original DVD in PgcEdit first and double-click the movie, then in the Pgc Editor click the "Export" button in the Sub-picture Colour Lookup Table, click Yes and save it. Finally, open the Muxman one and Import the saved file to have the same colours.

By the way, in DVDSubedit after you changed the colour did you apply the change to all subtitles before saving it? (Edit > Apply last modifications to all) If not then that may be why you didn't notice any change.

Okay first off before I was trying to do this in PgcDemux and not PgcEdit so I apologize for that.

I saved the color lookup table in PgcEdit and it gives me a "vts01_ttn01.clb" file. However, I cannot import this into MuxMan? Where do I? Only thing I can import in MuxMan is a chapter file from what I can tell... I'm using the free version.

And yes, I did apply the settings to ALL in DVDSubEdit and they still weren't changed from red to yellow (even though in the preview window in DVDSubEdit they all went to yellow).

It's exactly that, yes. Be sure to not tick Include End Time, as muxman crashes when this option is enabled.

Sorry, I meant for you to import the .clb file with PgcEdit (the same way you exported it), after muxing with MuxMan.

Open a PGC you want to copy the CLUT to and click Import. Then double click on the clb file.

Even easier is to actually have 2 instances of PgcEdit up and running and use Copy and Paste.

Exporting the .clb file in PgcEdit, re-authoring with MuxMan, and then re-importing the .clb into PgcEdit on the newly authored dvd worked PERFECTLY. Subtitles look spot on now. Thanks to all for the assistance!
