Making a mkv file of avi+srt files

hey i have some movies (avi. files) where i want to make mkv. files with some srt files..

1 avi. file+1 srt. file= 1 MKV file (softsubs) with maybe H.264 encoding maybe?

Why do you want to start with the AVI files? Why not start with your original DVDs? You'll get better quality that way.

I suppose he doesn't want to waste energy for re-riping and re-encoding. All we know how expensive is energy these days :)

I don't have the dvd's, this is files gotten from axxo..
