View Full Version : PSP will not play my videos that are larger than 100mb

So I recently got my PSP and have been messing around with megui cause I love the idea of AVC on a portable. At first I thought I had things all figured out as my encodes of shorter TV episodes length content play fine, but when I tried to play a full length movie I encoded I got unsupported format. I'm currently on firmware 3.50 and using the latest psp profile for megui(resolution 480x272, bitrate of 600kbps). For audio I'm using megui and making 64kbps LC-AAC 48000hz files(ND-AAC as the aac encoder). I than use the MP4 muxer(which to my knowledge is mp4box) in megui to mux my audio and video together. I did some fooling around and it seems that my encodes that worked were both at or around 100mb(they were 112mb). I tried splitting my larger movies into 200mb chucks and they didn't work, but when I made them 100mb they would play. I'm sort of at a loss as most of the information I'm able to find on psp videos is rather dated I haven't seen any mention by anybody of a file size limit on video files. If anyone has some input I'd be very happy as I'd rather not have to store movies as a series of 100mb files.

PS- Sorry if this is in the wrong section of the forum, but I wasn't sure where I should post. None of the PSP websites seem to have anybody familiar with video encoding(they usually just tell you to use PSPvideo 9 and have no idea what megui/AVC/AAC really are).

Tha't odd because I have also PSP 3.50 and everything works fine. Try to use my tool and let me know.

That is a really nice app, and it seems to have done the trick. I'm not really sure why, but the only thing I can think of is the audio frequency seems to be set at 44100Hz where as mine were done at 48000Hz(assuming your x264 settings are the same as sharktooths psp profile for megui otherwise it could be something else). Anyways thanks for the help, and your app really streamlines the process.

hey :) well im now having the same issue!

i can encode small versions of clips using trim () so there is nothing wrong with the settings, but try and remove trim() for full length encodes and i also get the same error...

i shall look into this some more!

48000Hz works as well!

im gonna try your prog atak, always interested in using new encoding tool!

BTW According to your web site PSP supports HE-AAC but the truth is that PSP will give you only LC part (half frequency). So instead of 44100Hz you hear only 22050Hz. My ears don't lie :)

ooh ok, ill add a note, its basically just a site to collate all the info i have about psp encoding :)

ill add a link to your site

i will do some more testing tomorrow, but i am also having an issue with megui and x264 so ill do some command line encoding and such and see how that goes.

@Atak_Snajpera, have you updated your program to use Level 3.0 yet? The latest official PSP firmwares support it.

@deets, Does that Tweak(sat=1.4, bright=19, cont=1.15) tweak actually work well? Do you have any small examples I could test?

Also, one thing I'd love to be able to do is find out the exact maximum settings you can use for x264 at the 3 different resolutions the /VIDEO folder supports on 3.30+ firmware PSPs.

It'd be nice to have a listing of switches/settings that can be used. I've been wanting this so I can tweak the settings in Avidemux to make maximum quality encodes that the PSP can support.

Glad to know I'm not alone with this error. Granted I've only done a handful of encodes since I only recently got my psp :P. I didn't realize bontragerphotography was your website deets! It's pretty much the only site I could find with up to date info on x264 and the psp up until this point.

*edit*It doesn't seem that RipBot264 supports the ogm container. Not really a big deal as it's not really used anymore, I just happened to notice. Guess I'll just demux and remux to mkv :P.

MKV container is much better than dead OGM or old AVI.

i will do some more testing tomorrow, but i am also having an issue with megui and x264 so ill do some command line encoding and such and see how that goes.

This message is for MeGUI users:
If your input file is AVI use OpenDMLSource() in script instead of DirectShowSource() and should work.

This a reason why my app doesn't use DirectShowSource() for avi's.

@Atak_Snajpera, have you updated your program to use Level 3.0 yet? The latest official PSP firmwares support it.
I will change that in next version but in terms of quality Level 3.0 won't give better results than 2.1. 3 reference frames and B-Pyramid are still not supported. :(

i once had this issue before, if i tried to play it in QT i would get a bad public atom, ill see if thats still causing probs, if it was, it was an avisynth thing with me

Megui sets output to .mp4 instead of raw .264.
I've decided to use raw stream to avoid any problems in future and it looks like I made good decision :)

deets
15th August 2007, 21:16
megui can output raw 264 as well, ill give that a go in a minute ;)

Atak_Snajpera

I meant by default Megui sets output to mp4 not raw

ooh and schrade, yeah it kinda works, basically brightens the screen up so there are less dark areas to ghost with.

I could upload a demo or two one with, one without :) maybe ill do that later as im not doing much tonight due to a bad neck :(

That would be great, thanks! I'm really curious at how it looks.

there you go, two files in there :) should be clear which is which

Hmm.. I see that it works but it lightens it up a bit too much. The blacks are more grey but I guess that's the price you pay for less ghosting...

deets
17th August 2007, 15:28
oh yep sadly so, the point was to remove as much black as possible as thats the main cause of ghosting :(

shame the scree isnt better

Wait, so the PSP doesn't support HE-AAC? When I check the my HE-AAC encoded videos information on my PSP it appears that your hearing is accurate :P. This is really disappointing as I was really liking the added compression.

When I used headphones the difference was huge and I immediately knew that something is wrong.BTW PS3 doesn't support HE-AAC neither.
