View Full Version : Comparing Clsid's, Casimir666's, Gabest MEdia Player Classic, testing EVR. Shocking !

I tested CLSID's, Casimir666's, and Gabest's Latest Media Player Classic.
I switched between using Vista Aero, and Vista Basic Appearance settings.
Using the Vista Aero Appearance, all three versions of Media Player Classic showed the same picture quality
regardless if output was default or evr.
Using Vista Basic Appearance, there was no difference if evr or default was used.
They were all the same picture, basically.
The aero pictures are starkly different than the vista basic pictures.
Showing that if Aero is used, EVR is used.
I looked in my system32 folder, and I don't have any d3dx9_??.dll in there.
I installed Directx sdk, so I know there's a d3dx10_??.dll, but I don't see those in there either.
I ghosted my system, so that direct x sdk install went away.
So the need for that dll seems to be a myth. As EVR worked fine without it.

Using EVR on Gabest's and Casimir's MPC built, I tried to calibrate the Brightness and Contrast, so I could calibrate the Hue and Saturation next, so I could get the EVR quality.
So I spent about a hour or so just fiddling with it.
And then I open Vista Media Center, and use the Vista Video decoder.
I'm using Aero all during this time.
Since using Aero causes MPC default to change brightness levels.
I figure it must change brightness levels in Vista Media Center too ?
So I open Vista Media center and look at the brightness test on my calibration dvd.
Guess what ?
The brightness Vista media center uses is different than if I don't use Aero, AND it's got different Brightness levels than MPC !
So, the Brightness levels MPC uses can't be EVR levels then, can it.
So then the whole point of using MPC for EVR is wrong ! :)
Good night from Canada
Edit.
Correction. Using Aero or vista Basic appearance doesn't affect the brightness in Vista Media Center edition.
But the brightness VMC uses is still different than the one MPC uses when using EVR.

Ummm...
EVR is the default renderer for Vista (as opposed to VMR9 in XP), so of course everything you need to use it shipped with Vista. And of course EVR is used if you choose the "Default" renderer.
In XP, you need the .NET 3.0 Framework installed to get EVR.
The d3dx9 DLLs are only needed for MPC's shaders (and probably the bilinear/bicubic scalers implemented as pixel shaders) - they've got nothing to do with EVR.

Brightness and Contrast directly affect hue and saturation calibration.
So with VMC and MPC using different brightness and Contrast, the Hue and Saturation must be different too !
Totally different result then.

Hehe i had no fun anymore with all those FILM/TV scale issues so i bought a LCD with Film Mode now i just click on a button on the LCD and done (LGs f-Engine http://us.lge.com/aboutus/pressdetail/detail/press_Computer%20Products_67.jhtml) or set it via the Software that can controll it from the Tray :P and really the color brightnes and gama visual quality is stunning, can't make screenshots tough ;)

as you can see im really amazed by this you have to see it in action (it's like a professional studio collor correction) :D
so everything can be TV Scale now just 1 click and boom Hollywood :D

ffdshow => mplayer pp => level fix => luminance and full luma range checked - very similar effect :D (however, sometimes the dark colours are too dark for me).
Though your monitor is surely superior and one is not bound to use ffdshow ;)

@CruNcher
well that's a nice feature from LG (I have the L204WT, witch one do you have?), but using haali renderer may be the best solution, because you can choose the luma levels (tv and pc), or the stuff HeadBangeR77 said.

L226WTQ, for me it's isn't as that would mean no Hardware acceleration and this is no option yet (not if i didn't found out wich uses more energy) ;)

The best solution is RGB32 :) BTW I have the sam LG monitor!

@Atak_Snajpera
nope not really best solution for colors is a good upsampleing either in the decoder or renderer
Mainconcept/Elecard for example can make use of GPU upsampleing (Nvidia/Ati) of YV12 input this cost no CPU resources :) and the results are perfect exactly the same as ffdshows high quality mode but without the CPU hit.
CoreAVC v 1.1.0.6 (reported that last year ago to the devs) dunno about 1.5 (didn't looked yet) had a very bad upsampleing even when you set RGB in the GUI (red stair stepping).
Edit: Checked CoreAVC 1.5 the Chroma quality is excelent now even in YV12 same for ffdshow (without high quality) current results can be found here http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=128890 :)
