Is x264 a codec?
From the origin of the word, codec means compressor and decompressor. While XviD and DivX have a decoding part, x264 is only an encodern, IIRC.
Why call x264 a codec if it doesnt have the decompressor part?

It's not a codec. Who said it was?

The same way how all MPEG4-ASP vids are commonly called DivXes. x264 is an encoder, coreAVC a decoder.

You'll find 'codec' is used as a drop in replacement (fancy schmancy types might say (neologism) for any program that can encode or decode. The correct usage of course is only for programs that can do both.

Yup that's absolutely correct.
co = compression/coder
dec = decompression/decoder

co/decompression
co/decoder
