Finding Layer Break with PgcEdit [Archive]

It's a complex question.

The LB is not "recorded" on the hard disc when you rip the DVD, unless you rip it in ISO mode with DVD Decrypter. In this case, it is recorded in the MDS file that is produced with the ISO.

In file mode (suitable for editing with PgcEdit) the LB is lost. However, there are some clues that are usually sufficient to guess where the LB was.
Usually, the LB is located in the main title. It is always at the beginning of a cell. Its "seamless playback" flag should be clear, but the seamless flag could have been set automatically by the ripper, to avoid the little pause during the layer change. Usually, but it's not a rule, the VOB ID changes at the layer break position. So, to find the layer break, double click on the main movie PGC in the left pane. Examine the cells. If a cell in the middle of the movie has its seamless flag unticked, it's probably the LB. Otherwise, look at the Vob/Cell ID buttons. If the first number (before the "/") changes in a cell (for example if it changes from 1 to 2), it's probably where the LB was. Also, if a cell has no program and chapter number, it might be the LB.

You can also launch the burn function, and click OK. PgcEdit will then open the LB selection dialogue. It will select the "best" position for the LB automatically. Usually, it's the original LB position, but in some cases, PgcEdit selects another position. Looks at the coloured lines, and at the explanation of the colours. The original LB is probably coloured.

Anyway, you don't have to select the original position. Any cell is suitable, but it is better to select a cell where the pause is not noticeable. (The last image of the previous cell is displayed during 1 or 2 seconds.)

Note that the problem is even more complex in the case of a multi-angle film. If your DVD has several angles, please post the output of Info -> PGC for the main movie here. I'll try to locate the LB.

You can also use the "seamless layer break" option, but take care, as this technique might be incompatible with some old players (although I haven't experienced problems so far, including with my very old Sony player.)
