Convert 1440x1080 to FullHD

Hello

I have some video material that is 1440x1080 and im trying to recode this material into AVCHD with nero vision and the result is a good picture and 5.1 sound BUT 2 vertical black bars on the side of the picture when playing that on my FullHD LCD tv.
As you noticed i am a neard in questions of encoding video (more like a 1 click program guy :) .... ) and i searched the forum and didnt get any ideas of how to resolv this.I think that if you "stretch" the 1440x1080 to 1920x1080 the picture will be messy is this right ???? But if any one can help guide me in recoding or whatever so i can watch the video without those black bars on the side i would apreciate that.:thanks:

Where did you get this material? Would it happen to be a downloaded rip of an HD movie that has been resized to 1440x800?

Stretching it likely doesn't matter as long as the output aspect ratio is correct.

It´s not a movie and it was not downloaded, it was given to me in a wmv file by a friend and its a documentary of dolphins with sting music and its great :) .... so i suspect it was an original 4:3 broadcast or something and i want it 16:9 1920x1080p in my LCD....

Well you first should make sure the LCD is actually 1080p; many LCDs take 1080p input but don't have nearly that many actual pixels.

is the footage 16:9, 4:3, or 16:9 compressed as 1440x1080, like all HD-camcorders from sony? my HC1 is 16:9 and encodes the video as 1440x1080 mpeg2 ts.

The video is ofcourse 1440x1088 (the 8 pixels should be cropped), with an Aspect Ratio of 16:9 (or 1.78:1).

This means if you encode the source to 1920x1080 your Aspec Ratio (AR) remains correct.

However, this is technically UPSCALING the video.
But trust only your eyes, if the result is good, then all is well.

(Many H.264 MBAFF Streams from satellite are 1440x1080 AR 16:9 also)

My LCD is brand new :p and Full 1080p with a PS3 connected via HDMI with ac3 5.1 pumping from my home theater speakers :) right now a Springsteen concert .... well i will upload 2 small jpegs - one of original info in gspot and the other the reencoded print screen of the player - so you can see what i mean and i have reencoded it in Nero Vison 4 at high quality for AVCHD in 1920x1080 and the Nero Showtime reports that but i have annoying black bars on the borders of the video so what can i do to get rid of them ???? :thanks:

Erm.. it seems like wherever that 1440x1088 vieo was taken from, they didn't properly set the aspect ratio to 16:9 for it. I know some HD video cameras actually record using 1440x1088 (1440x1080) but use non-square pixels so it ends up actually being 1920x1088 (1920x1080) because of that. That or it could very well be a native 4:3 1440x1080 feed, which seems very odd.

Try re-encoding it but try to set the encoded resolution as 1920x1088 or setting it to output it as 16:9. I know some encoders support this. Good luck!

My recode in nero produced a 1920x1088 and i selected 16:9 but it gave me the black bars on the side of the video :devil:
Can anyone advise an encoder so i can produce a mp4 file to see in my ps3 that can get of those black bars???

You could use MeGui. Go to the tools menu, select Avisynth script creator and open the file, don't worry, it'll be opened thanks to DirectShowSource.

Then on the options tab put the "Input DAR" to Custom and select 1.78 (it's 16:9); then you check "clever anamorphic encoding" which saves bitrate, it'll encode to a 4:3 non-square pixel resolution (widescreen DVDs are encoded this way), you can resize to whatever you want. 1024x768 is nice for 720p (it'll be stretched to 1365x768 on playback), just be sure that "Resize" and "Suggest Resolution" are checked. You could deinterlace it if needed. On the filters tab, make sure "Resize Filter" is set to "Lanczos" which brings good quality.

You could then add your own avisynth scripts if needed and then save the avs.

I'll load automatically on megui, and set the encoder options, I suggest you use the profile CQ-ASP_Q2_eq(crf), press the config button and change the "Quality" number to your liking. 18 is maybe a bit overkill since the size will be kinda big, but has almost transparent quality, usually 18-22 are the values used for great quality, the higher the number, the better quality of the encode. You could use 22.

edit: I just read you want it for the PS3, maybe the encode with that profile (CQ-ASP_Q2_eq(crf)) won't be played on your PS3, try to find a suitable way to config the encoder so it can be played on your PS3. You could add this sentence to you avisynth script to test only a part of the video:

trim(frame_start,frame_end),
for example:
trim(1340,2000)

so it'll encode only a part of the video (starting at the frame 1340 and ending at frame 2000, meaning only a few seconds), and you can do tests with your PS3. Anyway try to find the x264 encoder settings that will suit your PS3 with search.

I had the same problem, if you don't mind converting it to mkv, just load it in gdsmux and set the display size to 1920x1080. Those wmv-hd videos are true 1080p, using non-square pixels.
