Wasn't to sure where to go to find answers but i figured this was a good place to start. I recently downloaded an anime series which is supposedly dvd ripped, but when i play it the subtitles appear as boxes instead of eng subs.

For every video file theres 2 files associated with it, a sc.ass file and a tc.ass file. Videos only play under WMP or MPC.

Just wondering if im suppose to do something with these files or should I just look for another copy to download?

I think the subtitles are in Advanced SubStation Alpha format. It is a text-based, but more complex than the SubRip format (*.srt):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SubStation_Alpha

And maybe your subtitles are in japanese, or other asian language, and maybe because your OS doesn't have "support" for asian languages, it displays boxes instead of the asian characters.

You can verify this if you open the *.ass subtitles with a text editor, and look for a line like this:

Dialogue: Marked=0,0:00:01.18,0:00:06.85,DefaultVCD, NTP,0000,0000,0000,,{\pos(400,570)}Like an angel with pity on nobody

The subtitle is at the end of the line, and in this case is in english.

Try here (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm), paying particular attention to #6.

Right at the top of this forum is the all-important announcement (http://forum.doom9.org/announcement.php?f=6), as well. Helping out is grounds for a strike as well, this forum isn't the place for those discussions.
