Deinterlacing partially interlaced HDTV, jerky result.

I still have a hard time knowing how to deinterlace properly, I usually just let meGUI decide for me. However this time the result in the interlaced sections in jerky

This is from one of the interlaced sections and is panning to the left and one of the most notably jerky bits.

and this is what meGUI told me:

I know the progressive parts (well some of them at least) are film, because it's a behind the scenes show and the camera's are shown (panavision), plus the grain is so heavy it makes me sick, but it's the interlaced sections which are poor.

I get further confused by the fact that AFAIU the MBAFF interlacing is decided by the encoder?

It happened because TDeint didn't recognize the frame as interlaced (in full=false mode every frame is checked first), the thresholds governing the detections must be too high. The parameters controlling the decision are: cthresh, chroma, blockx, blocky, and MI. You can look in the manual for what they do and how they might help, but you always run the risk of deinterlacing progressive sections if you lower them too much.

Are you sure it's not standards converted or something?

If you look at just one field, it has double images.

foxyshadis, thanks, I'll try and understand the manual and play with the parameters and see if that helps.

2bdecided, I'm not sure. The show is "Heroes Unmasked". It contains: show footage, which is film sped up to 25fps, no interlacing; back stage footage, interlaced; and cast interviews, interlaced.

The credits only name BBC, other places I've seen it said to be BBC/NBC. There is no way the BBC can have taken the backstage stuff, despite claiming to, since they didn't even buy the show until it had aired and they realised the mistake in not buying it in the first place.
