I did a search and couldn't find anything related to my situation, so I'll apologize in advance if this has already been covered.

I have an external hd connected to a SA 8300 HDDVR through an E-SATA cable. I suspect the dvr is faulty as there are certain channels that it won't pick up, and others that are pixelated quite heavily at times. If I swap out the box, when I go to plug in the external drive, all the info will be lost when the drive is formatted to the new one. Is there a way to transfer the information to my computer, format the drive, then download the programs back the external drive? In no way am I looking to make hard copies of any of the programs, I just don't want to loose any of them in the process of replacing the faulty cable box.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

bmp,

Follow this link for instructions and software downloads needed to transfer HD video from DVR to your pc and then process the streaming data into mpegs.

The way the Motorola DVR's work, you must play the movies you have saved on your DVR in real time and pipe it through the network or firewire connection to your pc.

It is a slow and tedious process if you have a lot of data to backup and I imagine it helps you glean out the so-so movies and specials and only backup what you cannot replace or wouldn't want to have to try finding again.
