I figured out how to save it as soon as they offered it. If you're clever you can also figure out how to download higher quality versions of the movies.

By clever, do you mean possess basic reading skills? It has the word "bitrate" in the link(s) for pete's sake!

Also, I'd hardly call films like "Almost Heroes" and "Casablanca" garbage.

I guess that would be useful for people who don't want to encode. Are you really saving yourself any effort or risk though? Just get the DVD's and do your own encodes. I guarantee they'll look better, and you won't get your Netflix account cancelled.

well i bring this up because i use linux and sadly no 'watch now' for me. (probably because by design windows media player shows a black window when connected to my tv as opposed to xine which just shows the moo-vee - they want to disallow vcr'ing).

watching moo-veez on my 17-inch monitor wouldnt justify me buying a 36-inch tv. i have win 2k but the min requirements say win-xp or vista and i dont have $399.00 to drop on a new os; is there any luck for me or am i just sol.

on attack of the show-the feed they mentioned this and a response from netflix saying this is 'highly illigal'.

i know the patriot act/ dmca changed the game but if this is to make a generic medium available on another platform, doesnt this fall under fair-use ? or does the dmca make fair-use illigal ?

Depends on your interpretation of the DMCA.

Doom9's interpretation, at least from what I understand, (see the main page of the site) is that fair use overrides the DMCA and that the DMCA does not restrict fair use. The MPAA/RIAA and other industry groups believe the exact opposite: that the DMCA's purpose is to restrict such fair use.

It probably ain't WMP exactly. It's probably because of 'overlay' mode. Several possible solutions... Turn off overlay or VMR or other accelerated modes in the player setup pages... Turn off acceleration in the DXDiag program... Set overlay mode for the second screen in your video driver (example: on my laptop I can set 'theater mode' in the ATI Catalyst Control Center)... I don't think it's to prevent recording it though.
