Hi, I have dell system with winxp home, I want to install xp on another machine will it work? I've been told if I phone microsoft up the tell them my mobo has died and I've installed a new mobo they will give me a new activation key, what do think

and what does that have in common with Development?
if your windows xp home got preinstalled on your dell then it's an OEM version and it wont work on any other machine.
telling them you have a broken mobo is not always "working" and also is not "politically correct" (when you know it's a lie) but...

From my experience, you can transfer an OEM XP license to different hardware. In my case, the old computer had sat around unused for over a year before I transferred the OS. I didn't even have to phone MS-- the CD key activated just fine online. I think it's Vista that disallows transferring OEM licenses.

Do it at your own risk. It may succeed on the other machine, but the original one will likely be barred from updates. I don't know for sure, but in any event, it's a pretty slimy thing to do if you intend to keep the original machine running the OS.
