i'm using the tutorial over at http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?act=ST&f=167&t=611163 to do some mkv - wmv hd conversions for playback to xbox 360 via the non hd dvd drive. all of my mkv files are 720p and i'm wanting to retain that video quality as good as is possible. anyhow, i've followed the tutorial and it works fine. the only complaint i have thus far is that after the re-encode, the first ~5 mins of the movie's video is choppy and non fluid. after that, the rest of the movie looks fine. all action scenes are smooth and everything looks great.
i'm using tmpgenc xpress 4.0, does anyone have any ideas why the first ~5 mins are screwy, but the rest is good? also, if anyone has a more straight forward/easier/better method than the one i linked to, i'm all ears/eyes/whatever. :)
thanks

1. Why don't you just re-rip your original HD-DVDs?
2. Are these MKVs Variable Framerate?

i forgot all about this post. :p
1. no disc to re-rip from. it's a few sample collections of hd content (mostly trailors) i got from a buddy some time ago. he found it somewhere on the net. i want to get it to a dvd to see how it does on the 360. i still haven't purchased a stand alone player, or the hd dvd drive for the 360 yet. i want to see what i'm missing out on.
2.not a clue on whether it is vbr or cbr.

Variable framerate, not bitrate.
Can you post a sample of the choppy encoded file you made, along with a sample of the original? You can use Mediafire for uploads.

not too feasible. still rocking dial up. it would take forever.
(edit) - it's just very unfluid, as if it skips a frame or something. it's not unwatchable, and it will suffice for my purposes of seeing some hd content on the 360, especially since it smooths out after the first few mins. but i'd like to figure out how to get it fluid if i could.
