Hi all, excuse a newbies ignorance.

I am having great difficulty backing up my copy of Van Helsing. DVDShrink gives the above error and cannot read the disk and this is a first for me.

No sweat I thought I'll use DVD Decrypter - no luck, DVDFab HD Decrypter - same result; a bunch of uncorrectable errors which seemingly preclude burning to a DVD.

Has anyone encountered this problem out there, is it a "dud" disk or some kind of copy protection I am encountering?

It is "some kind of copy protection." There is plenty of info here on this subject, including info specific to your title.

If you've tried dvd fab decryptor and that fubars too, it's most likely either a dud disc (maybe bad master error) or it's scratched (even a teeny scratch will kill some discs).

If the former, you're stuffed.
if the latter, take it to a video shop - most of them will clean a disc for you for about $3.
