View Full Version : Audio/Video Sync Problem

I've been searching for a thread with something like this but haven't been able to find one.
I'm backing up my DVD's using AutoGK and have been very successful so far but unfortunately I've come across one that is giving me a headache. When I try to encode Crimson Tide (Unrated) to xvid with original AC3 5.1 the result ends up with about a 2 second delay between the audio and video.
I had run into that problem on a previous movie and discovered the root of the problem was actually the decrypter I was using so I switched to DVDFab Decrypter and it solved the problem. This time I am already using that and still have the problem.
I tried using Gordion Knot (not auto) to manually adjust the audio sync and have had no luck although I have to admit I'm not very skilled with that program. Is that a good way to go? If so could someone point me to the way to do it. Most importantly I need to know how to find the exact delay I should use.
If this issue has already been addressed please feel free to point me to a thread.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Instead of Gordian Knot, use VirtualDubMod to correct the synch. I'm surprised you haven't found a similar thread to this particular question since it has been asked and answered many hundreds of times by now.
Open the file, click Streams > Stream List, right-click the audio and select Interleaving, input a value in milliseconds (Try 1700), click File > Save as, select Direct Stream Processing from the lower drop-down, and save undera new, unique filename and view the new file. It's trial-and-error - you can speed the process by selecting only a small portion of the video, then selecting all for the final, synched save.

I guess I was just hoping there was a better way of determining the exact delay. The guess and check method is kind of a slow process even if you only do it with a small sample.
Thanks for you help.

When you get a big delay like that it's usually caused by funny timestamps right at the beginning of the VOB. Try to start your project in by several GOPs from the beginning. You'll have to do it manually though. Search for threads about this trick. I've a steak on the grill and can't search right now. :)

I'm sorry to say, you're way beyond me on this. I don't even know what a GOP is so I don't know what to search for or if I find it I won't know how to recognize it. I hope you enjoy your steak. :)
I've been reading about GOP's after doing a search and am totally lost. I'm 'sorry but I'm a serious newbie on this stuff.
BTW. I don't mean to sound unappreciative on this. I am thankful to get any response here.

I think I have found the correct delay on the file. I did it by going to Streams>Report in VirtualDub Mod and finding the difference between the length of video and audio streams. That is the amound I need to delay.
The problem I'm having now is that the resulting video file seems to not want to go full screen. I'm sure it is because of a setting in Vdub Mod but I can't find it anywhere.

How is the easiest way to start the project in by several GOP's? I assume there is no way to "make" AutoGK do that for you is there?

Great trick! I just tried that, after manually figuring a 7500ms delay on V for Vendetta. Going to File > File Information shows differing sizes for video and audio, a 7.48s delay. Awesome!
I used to just throw away encodes with audio lag problems, but this makes thing so much easier. On my athlonXP 3000+ it only takes about 4 minutes to re-interleave a 1200mb file.
As an aside: I just read that AutoGK has ceased development, but I can't find an announcement or reason. Is there any posting that says why it was stopped, and what is recommended for the future? Thanks.

Just because AutoGK has ceased development doesn't mean it needs to get replaced now. There are, however, many other apps that can do the same thing and are being advanced regularly.
As far as an official announcement, read the AutoGK FAQ at the top of this sub-forum.
