Aussie DVB teletext -> MPEG-4 Subtitles

Normally when I record shows I'll demux, cut out the commercials with Mpeg2-Schnitt and then convert to x264 (either MKV or MP4 container) using StaxRip.

Now I'm considering preserving the subtitles.. I've been able to extract the subtitiles with ProjectX when I demux.. but what subtitle format should I use? And how can I cut the subtitiles at the same time as the commercials?

Then once I've got the subtitle file ready, how do I add it to the video in StaxRip?

Teletext? SSA then, it preserves formatting.

Not sure how you can cut automatically from Staxrip's data, but I've just this very minute starting making a subtitle cutter using meGUI's cut files and could add Staxrip support somehow. Otherwise you'd have to open the subtitles in an editor using the avs trim line as a guide.

EDIT: Oh, you are cutting with mpeg2schnitt, not staxrip? Then cut out the middleman and use ProjectX's cutting, it will cut the subtitles also.

I've been using ProjectX to demux and edit files from my Topfield PVrRt5000 for the last 2 years. So far I haven't found any other program that will demux audio, video and subtitles from MPEG TS files.

The advantage of ProjectX is it cleans up many transmission errors and of course keeps the subtitles in sync - no wasting time using other programs to try and re-sync. I use the presetting for subtitles as srt.

After demuxing to extract the subtitle track I then remux the audio and video in Womble producing a mpeg2 file that I run into AutoGK to make a DivX (actually I use Xvid codec) and then burn that file along with the srt file onto the CD.

If you don't mind cutting with Cuttermaran rather than Mpeg2Schnitt...

I have a script I wrote some time ago that cuts MicroDVD and Subrip subtitles based on a Cuttermaran project file.

To use, drag the .cfp file onto submarine.vbs. It will look for .sub and .srt files that are similarly named to the video stream file in the same directory and cut them.
E.g. if the video file is called MyRecording.m2v , then it will cut MyRecording.srt and MyRecording(English).sub .

To use srt support, the framerate must be set on the first line of submarine.vbs . Also I am not 100% sure about its accuracy. (It may have an off-by-one type error, but nothing cumulative. In any case, teletext subtitles in Aus aren't very accurate, so it should not be noticable.)

Sub support doesn't require the framerate to be set, and should be accurate.

The cut subtitles are usually output with _cut appended to the name. For the examples shown above, they would be output as MyRecording_cut.srt and MyRecording_cut(English).sub

If your heart is set on Mpeg2Schnitt, it should not be too hard to adapt the script to it.
