View Full Version : Cannot Get Hd E1 To Play 3x Dvd

I AM the most frustrated person on this planet.!
I have purchased a hd e1 here in aus for the express purpose of creating 3x discs to play my home hd content. (standard red laser dvd with hd content)
I have spent weeks getting nowhere with about 100 coasters !
I use ulead movie factory to author the hd content (folders or iso) and nero 7 to burn.
All is fine and final discs play on windvd and show as hd video BUT....
My new Toshiba hd e1 continues to state "disc is not dvd format"
and will not play the disc.
I understand the us version hd a1 does all this fine.
I think the hd e1 does not like the file structure or the detail of a simplE hd pal video content but I'm unsure and a rank novice when compared to some of you people on this forum .
I am desparetely looking for assistance if anyone can help.
ps.
It is not related to media type, dvd writer type, firmwares etc etc as I've used several different pcs, firmwares, disc types, formats (roms +. - etc)
Thanks in advance

Did you try reading the guide here? Two posts below yours at the time of your post. Specifically the section "Burn with Nero". 100 coasters? Why are you not testing with RW?

Hi,
I am that frustrated, I really have lost all sensibility with what discs I use.
I have also read however that IF THE DISK NEEDS TO BE DVD ROM.. I will need to do a full format/erase not a quick one to allow my writers to convert from the +format to rom.
I have obviously tried all these options with same result.
The suggestion you offer in the guide is for NTSC and 24***frame rates.
There are noted problems even in doing this regard sync and at the end, I still have a non PAL dvd.
I only require a SIMPLE author process.. most US people seem to be more advance than us simple folk but still explain how simple the MF hd file creation process and then to disc is??
thanks.

Hi!
If I understand U correct, u have a mini HD-DVD or whatever u want to call it and u live in PAL land.
I assume your source is 25fps/50Hz.
The HD-E1 does not support 25fps/50Hz HD-DVDs atm. I wrote already a lot of mails concerning this to them.
All they say, it comes in a firmware update this year.
Btw. thats the only reason I have not yet bought a HD-E1 and a HDV camcorder.

ok.
after months now of testing and discussion with Toshiba, they have confirmed a firmware update that would allow hd pal source to play on the hd e1 is NOT IN SIGHT !
Please everyone, send your displeasure and needs for this to Toshiba to exert some pressure to make this happen..
For the life of me, I cannot imagine why a large , reputable company such as Toshiba has unveiled to the European world, a PAL based HD E1 (as distinct to the HD A'S) that will only play NTSC based hd files !
This is scandlous and totally unacceptable.
These country's are PAL, with PAL based source providers with ALL THE MAJOR camcorder suppliers now supplying PAL to the Euro nations BUT YET Toshiba's PAL machine WILL NOT PLAY HD PAL !!
ABSOLUTELY REDICULOUS THAT THEY SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO SELL THEM !!
Mine is for sale if anyone is interested.
Does anyone know if Blu ray will play PAL based 3x dvd's ?
Thanks.

Yeh, It is a little inconvenient.
If you are creating PAL content on a camcorder (in HD presumably) Then I would suggest taking the 25fps and doing a ~4% speed decrease to take it to 23.976fps and encoding in NTSC @ 1080p. You can change the audio so it doesn't pitch shift and most sets are progressive, so you shouldn't notice any difference in playback quality.
I think this is why they are not too quick off the mark releasing a firmware upgrade, as there is a workaround.

Thanks Jim for your comments.
Could you please explain why 23.976 and the best software to do this.
I have tmpg that I find very good.
I will have a play but would appreciate your comments.
I have tried converting from PAL TO ntsc 29.7 fps but the output is jittery.
Thanks again.

23.976fps is a progressive format, so ideal for PAL material. If you really need fast motion then you could use a 720p format @59.976fps.
I would suggest using 23.976 for your first experiment.
Tools are virtualdub
avisynth (there is a forum dedicated to this)
x264 with the HD patches (find it in the x264 forum here)
I'm just off to my brothers to play with his new PAL SONY HD studio cam, so I'll see if I can get a little clip to show the process... Its quite easy once you know how.

thanks Jim,
I have tried for several months now to get a smooth pal to ntsc alteration.
Apart from being jittery, the picture playback is no where near as clear as it should be with a hd source.
Tmpg has been the best.
I've tried frameserving with many apps such as procoder but the tmpg reencode from the original hd pal footage seems best.
I tried the 23.976p as you suggested last nite but it looked much identical as the 29.76i. (although I did re-encode with tmpg)
My hd player is only good for 1080i (hd e1) so I'm not sure what this hardware does when is sees the 1080p material regards yet another conversion?
Anyways, I look forward to your assistance as there has been noone else able to assist.
I can pm you if direct contact is easier for you.
Thanks again.

The HD-EI will output upto 1080i, but if you have a look on the back of your movies, you will see that they are all encoded at 1080p @ 23.976fps. This is what we are going to replicate.
firstly I took some PAL material (from the BBC) and put it into my avs script.
DirectShowSource("bbchdTS-sample.ts")
Trim(3400, 4000)
TomsMoComp(-1,5,1)
AssumeFPS(24000,1001)
ResampleAudio(48000)
pop to http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=125568
for encoding parameters
I guess you know how to construct the disk from then on as you have observed bad results.
I have an iso from my output I can send, so PM me

Hi!
According to
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=65757
at IFA, Olivier Van Wynendaele from EU HD DVD Promotion Group said:
From December, all HD players will be able to replay 50p. (This means that European-originated HD shows will not need to go through a lossy standards conversion process to be released on HD DVD).
Hope this is really true. I think it must be done for the Grönemeyer HD-DVD, which, I'm sure, is produced in 25p.
Looking forward for this.
Greetings.
