AVI file problem (codec problem or smth else)

I have AVI file (DivX 5.1.1, MPEG-1 Layer 3)
I have K-lite codec pack installed (ver. 3.20 full)

Can't play this file with: Media player Classic, WMP11, Intervideo WinDVD, Winamp, VirtualDubMod

GSpot error information:
File truncated in the "legacy index" area.
· 835 KB (855,348 bytes) are missing

The same AVI plays perfectly on KMPlayer (installed only internal codecs)

The questions:
1. How can I open this file in VirtualDubMod? I want to cut some fragments from it.

2. Is AVI REALLY corrupted, or it's just K-Lite kodec pack problem? I know lots of people doesn't like this pack at all (don't know why; may be cause of such cases), but I need this kodec pack because it contains all kodecs I ever need to do encoding.

I guess KMPlayer has the internal smarts to dynamically recreate a valid index. <shrug>

Anyway, it should be easy to fix.

Download VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org/download) and then unzip it to the directory of your choice.

Launch it (VirtualDub.exe), and then in the "Open video file..." dialog, check the "Ask for extended options after this dialog" option and then find and open the troubled .avi file.

In the next dialog box, check "Re-derive keyframe flags" and then click on OK.

Once all is done and loaded, go to Video menu and just select "direct stream copy." (Audio already defaults to direct copy.)

Now just save the AVI to a different name.


That probably will fix your file.


Edit #1: BTW, when opening the file in VirtualDub, it will tell you that it is corrupted if, indeed, it is.

Oops.. I missed the "Mod" part of "VirtualDubMod". Sorry. Well, the procedure I described above should be the same since VirtualDubMod is based off an old VirtualDub, right? :p <shrug>

1) Load the .AVI you created into GSpot and post a screen capture back here

2) Have you tried playing the .AVI on a different system?

3) What software and procedures did you use to create the .AVI?

Though the older version of VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.2 (it goes with Gordian Knot) didn't help, the latest VirtualDub ver. 1.7.2 fixed the file, remade key frames and now it's all right.

Now the video plays all right.
