Vista Problems

I'm just testing out a copy of vista on my laptop...play back of avi's seems to be in slow motion...I've installed ffdshow and xvid 1.1 codec's but I don't seem to be able to get it to work... what do I need to play back divx avi's on Vista anyone ? (apart from a new graphics card)

I am also using Vista right now without any playback problem. Even with WMP11 everything seems all right. Maybe you don't need to upgrade your graphics card but its driver.

I ran into a similar problem when developing one of our programs. It was fine on XP but playback was slow on Vista.

It was due to the audio. Specifically, any programs written to use DirectShow (i.e., most) automatically use DirectSound for audio. The problem is that Vista uses a different way of sending audio to the soundcard. The old DirectSound way is emulated in software and this is very slow.

To test if this is your problem, just disable your soundcard in Control Panel/Devices. Play the videos again and see if they play properly. Re-enable the soundcard afterwards (unless you don't want to, of course!)

If it turns out to be the issue, you'll need to post more details about your system.

Typically, WMP11 on Vista doesn't suffer the problem since it is probably written to avoid using DirectSound emulation.

There are other possibilities, though. A similar thread is active on DVInfo.net. Disabling the soundcard didn't help in that case and the problem still hasn't been solved.

(For our program, we had to make it Vista-aware and provide non-DirectSound options for audio playback.)
