Video Freeze in Virtual Dub VCR

I Have Virtual Dub VCR. It's a Virtual Dub version for users with WDM drivers.

I'm Capturing With Analog A/V Cable from my VHS player.

In Capture Mode I See the movie from my VHS in Overlay mode.

When I Start Capture, The Movie Freeze.

Everything seems to work fine with the capturing.

Does Anyone Know Why It's Freezing when starting capture?

Any Settings to change?

VirtualDub-1.6.19 works but I have frame dropps with it and the movie freeze when I start capture.

So Virtual Dub VCR Is better. No frame drops! But do you know how to fix that it not freeze when pressing capture F6?

No frame drops! But do you know how to fix that it not freezeI'm sorry, I don't undrstand what you're saying - If it FREEZES when you try to compress and, therefore, it's not capturing ANY frames, how can you say "no frames are dropped"?

It's not the capture that freezes. Only the preview, in overlay mode.

It capture but I can't see the picture from my VHS player in preview. I see it until i start capturing.

It's not a really important thing but I want to fix it because now I don't know where on the tape I am when capturing.

It depends on the chip of the capture card. With some you get better results with preview, and with others with overlay. It also depends on the resolution. Try toggling between overlay and preview and see which works for you. If you can manage to capture blindly, most problem-free would be no preview at all.

I have tried preview but I don't see anything even before starting capture so with Virtual DUb is Overlay the one i should use.

Maybe the picture freeze when I start capture because I use a VfWWDM wrapper "Microsft WDM image capture (Win32)"

I have tried Virtual VCR and the preview works good! But in this software I have a issue I get many frame drops.

Virtual Dub VCR Sync is the only software i tried that don't getting frame drops. But now I should test iuVCR.

I think Virtual Dub VCR Sync woks great because it fix that the video and audio are in sync.

Any suggestion on good capturing software? Or anyone that's good at any of the software I tried?

Is it good usig VfWWDM wrapper? How is the picture quality?

There is an option called "Hide display on capture" that would cause the behavior you describe, check if you have that enabled. It's under the Capture menu in 1.6 versions, not sure where it was in the older ones but might be the same.

I found "hide on capture". When enebled it and I start capture there are no display.

Maybe it's the best I will get.

It works without display, it's only a little bit funnier to see the movie when capturing!

So you're saying the behavior is the same with that enabled and disabled? I've just noticed that the "hide" option actually doesn't do anything for me. The info panel and capture overlay preview are still displayed when I capture. Could've sworn it froze the preview in the past for me...

Something I noticed by accident though, when I hit capture with Fraps open, Fraps shows the frame rate in the corner. Not before and not after capture, only during. Fraps is only supposed to display the frame rate when 3D hardware is used to render something, so maybe it's a graphics card issue? I think this would only apply if what I describe happens to you: the picture is only frozen during capture, not after it is complete.

I've just noticed that the "hide" option actually doesn't do anything for me. The info panel and capture overlay preview are still displayed when I capture. Could've sworn it froze the preview in the past for me...The hide display on capture feature was disabled for directshow drivers somewhere along the line up until the most recent version, 1.7.2 I think.

I take it all from the beginning:

I start VirtualDub 1.4.9.3 VCR + SYNC http://www.virtualdub.net/download.htm

In Virtual Dub I open File/Capture avi

In capture mode I see a blue screen (Overlay). Now I press play on my VHS-player and I see the movie in Virtual dub.

Now I press F6 (Capture Video). The movie freeze and the information panel starts displaying everything.

When I press Esc a black screen comes up where the frozen image have been the hole capture. The Information panel stop.

The movie are complete. It works good to look at it (no frozen image).

If I enable "hide on capture" (in capture mode "capture/hide on capture") the only difference is that when I'm starting capture a grey picture is shown (capture overlay are disabled) (instead of the frozen image).

I also tried to disable "show information panel". When starting capture the computer restart!!!

Maybe it is a graphics card issue but with other softwares like Virtual VCR the movie don't freezes.

Maybe it's because that Virtual Dub are made for Vfw so I'm using a Vfw/WDM wrapper (Microsoft WDM Image Capture (Win32)). With softwares like Virtual VCR and iuVCR that are made for WDM the picture won't be frozen.

So maybe I have an issue with the Vfw/WDM wrapper (Microsoft WDM Image Capture (Win32)).

If you're wondering why I'm not using Virtual VCR or iuVCR, it's because I get frame drops with them.
