I've always used 32 ms for AC3, and 1 frame for mp3, seems to work ok. If you're using VDubmod, I've found that you have to say NO to the rewrite header as CBR message too if your mp3 track is mp3.
I had a Phillips 642 for a long time, and STB compatibility was always pretty difficult.
I've graduated to DVP3960 and DVP5982, they are much more "compatible". I've even thrown some qpel and Didee's 6 of 9 matrix at it, seems to handle it ok.
