I'm told Trellis hurts quality in CQ mode. Is the same true for CRF mode?

I think this goes more in the H.264 forum, but the entire point of trellis is to decrease quality in places where it matters least to free up bitrate for the places where it matters most.

Trellis improves quality-per-bitrate. It may or may not adjust bitrate slightly in CQ and CRF modes, but then so does just about every other option.

Would it be more correct to say trellis improves psnr-per-bitrate? Quality is a rather subjective thing, and to my eyes, I actually dislike the product of trellis.
