I want to install the latest x.264 build so I can encode with it using virtual dub, which version of the build do I need and what directory do I need to place it in?
The older x.264 encoder I was using did not use both cores of my cpu which is why I want to update it.

VDub requires VfW and there are no official VfW x264 builds for some time now. I guess just grab the latest unofficial build you can find.

Neither will any newer one. I'm sorry, but there are no multithreaded VFW builds; you're just going to have to give it up and use another GUI for full performance.

I just used my last VfW build which was the one I bundled with FU2.6. Not sure what rev but it would have been from around April.

There's only r606 x264vfw can work on multythreads. Any revisions after r606 have a serious problem on multythreads when it work on vfw.

I take it you're referring to the standalone x264vfw versions? Have you tried the ffdshow encoder? (it installs with ffdshow). It uses the latest x264 version, and the latest one from ffdshow.info is up to date to revision 667. I don't use it to encode, but I have tried it with multiple threads, it works fine!

Yeah most of us round here don't use the VfW version.
You could check out DeathTheSheeps site: http://deaththesheep.uni.cc/
That appears to be upto date, and a forum post claims multithreaded on the lastest build

Cheers, that latest build is indeed multithreaded.

The original poster (comrinec) should give Avidemux (http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1006659&postcount=1) a try instead of VirtualDub.
It has almost the same functional range (even various exclusive features) plus built-in and up-to-date x264 encoder (r667).
So no VfW trouble any more...

Its really sad that i cant use x264's latest options with Virtual Dub. I have to use VirtualDub for its great filters and uncounted useful features.

What is it with virtualdub you can do that you can't possibly do with Avisynth?
