Capturing problem with bright lights

I tried to record a TV show tonight that had a lot of fireworks and bright white lights on, everytime this happened my video capturing would flicker heavily until the flashing segment was over. It is very similar to VHS rolling/flickering, the picture goes off screen in almost a zigzag with black edges.

I use a Canopus 100 ADV unit to capture from Sky TV using SVIDEO, this encodes in to a uncompressed DV video file. I tried a couple of capturing programs but the problem was the same. I know it is not a major problem, as fireworks don't happen all that often, but I am just curious as to the reason, as this show had fireworks for 5 different sections at the start making the video very choppy on playback. My PC seems fast enough, and I have tried 2 different HDD drives. My PC is a 4200XP Dual Core with 1gb Ram and Windows XP, 7200 RPM drives. Every other segment is fine, even fast moving, it just seems to be bright white flashes/fireworks that causes this annoyance.

Anything I can do to fix this problem ?

It seems that your video level from Sky is too high. Add a 3 db attenuator to the video line in.

I've noticed a similar thing with Sky. We've got Sky going into one of those wireless sender things, with the receiver upstairs plugged into an LCD TV. When ever there's a big are of white on the screen, the picture jumps all over the place.

There's an option in the Sky box setup menu to change the contrast to "low", which helps but doesn't stop it completely.

I gotta get me one of those 3dB attenuator things!
