mkvmerge enables subs even if all disabled

I have the latest mkvmerge and if I add alot of subs to a MKV file, even if they are all disabled, one of them is enabled. Annoyingly enough, it's never English thats enabled so I have to force a English Sub to default then turn it off when playing the movie.

Is this a bug with mkvmerge?

It's rather a player issue. If you globally enable subtitle playback in your player the first subs stream will be displayed regardless of it's "default" flag status.

You could
– Disable subtitles globally by default. Problem is, when you have "forced subs only" track you'll need to enable it explicitely. Not too convenient...
– As first subtitle track use a dummy subs file that doesn't contain any subs.

The player is Media Player Classic. Also, Sometimes after the language of a Subtitle, it will say "(Unknown 7)" or something. I am not sure what that's all about. I might just write a dummy SSA file or something. Thanks for the idea.

Do you use Haali's splitter or MPC's internal mkv filter? With haali's, you can explicitly prioritize subs, including disabling them when certain audio tracks are available, whereas MPC's will always use the default sub track. (Or the first if none is default.)

Haali's Splitter. But yeah, Even if I explicitly make all subs as off with mkvmerge, One of the tracks still comes on during playback. Only seems to happen with 4+ subtitle tracks. I usually convert the English track to SSA and load the rest as straight VobSub, if that matters.
