Played in a window, they look fine, but when I go fullscreen (1280x1024x32@60hz), they look like this (http://hypernova.amarok-shadow.com/b/vlcbrokendirectx.jpg). Every video I've tried does this in VLC and Windows Media (mplayer2.exe). AVI, OGM, MPEG etc all do it. It never used to do this.

You keep saying "does this". What exactly are you drawing our attention to? In your JPEG what are you saying is wrong?

In addition to answering the question posed by "neuron2", it would be beneficial if you posted examples (same frame) of BOTH types (windowed and fullscreen) of images...

If you look at the edges of the buildings, they aren't straight lines, as if every second scanline is out of place. I think updating DirectX fixed it though. I apparently don't still have a copy of that video on my hard drive, and the disc is stuffed away in a closet somewhere. If I see it again I'll post shots of both sizes.

Google for deinterlacing and inverse telecine.

I see your problem. You need to use 48@12Hz.

12hz? You're joking right?

OK, here's a good comparison shot. It's most noticeable in the text (even the subtitles), the hair, and the face. Compared to the windowed-mode shot, the lines are rough and fuzzy. For some reason it wasn't doing this yesterday, but now it's back. Scaling the window doesn't cause it, only selecting Fullscreen from the menu does.

This doesn't happen with Windows GDI Video Output, only DirectX and DirectX 3D output. (OpenGL output is broken an entirely different way, which I pointed out on the VLC forum.) However it does happen in all other players. (And GDI Output has annoyances like the menus not working properly. >_>)

(Maybe I just had it set to GDI output yesterday and forgot about it, but that wouldn't explain why it's set to DirectX 3D today... bah.)

[edit] Pfft, I forgot about that silly "attachments pending approval" thing. Just get them here (http://hypernova.amarok-shadow.com/b/ccs1.jpg) and here (http://hypernova.amarok-shadow.com/b/ccs2.jpg) then.
