I see from the FAQ that AC3Filter now has this feature. I prefer to use ffdshow though, if possible.

Why not ? when the Input AC3 is 5.1 ,ffdshow will output 5.1 via spdif

Nothing special....

hmm, but one thing... the ffdshow config dialog may look different nowadays but the concept is the same

If I set output to AC3 then ffdshow won't connect to any audio renderers. I tried manually connecting it to Default WavOut, directly to the SPDIF, even to DirectShow...no luck.

did you try to alter the merit?...

as an example I show you my configuration concerning ffdshow tryouts - rev 926 - may 26 2007

Does not work with latest stable build ffdshow_beta3_rev1324_20070701_clsid.exe. Merits don't matter (yet) -- I'm testing in GraphEdit. As soon as I switch to AC3 output, the filter will not connect to any renderers.

I'm currently using ffdshow_rev1355_20070715_clsid.exe... and transcoding 6Ch AAC-LC/HE to 6Ch AC3 and passing it over SPDIF to my external surround sound amp is working fine for me.

My settings are as follows: -

Either "libfaad2" (good for AAC-LC) or "realaac" (good for AAC-LC and AAC-HE)

@SMD why you think that faad isn't good for HE-AAC? faad nicely decode SBR part or there is some catch?
