I know that you have to have the cropping and resize done in the first pass. What would the effect be if I do not add smooth filters etc to the first pass but add them on the final pass? This way it would cut down on encoding time.
Just wondering???

Resolution (together with cropping) AND filters are a must for the first-pass. Filters like TempSmoother change a lot in the video data, so it is very important to have them in first pass, since the first pass is meant for collecting the info about video.
take care
