What do you mean by 1080p?

Windows Desktop? Absolutely. Apple HD trailer level bitrate 1080p H.264? Yes.

BluRay / HD-DVD H.264 1080p? Maybe. The 7900 doesn't have any decode acceleration, so you will probably drop frames on bitrate spikes.

If you want to play games, then stick with the 7900. If you want to watch movies, then get an 8500 / 8600 or a radeon 2400 / 2600.

Lowest cpu usage with coreavc and powerdvd 7.3.

The video card doesn't have any impact on HD-DVD and BluRay decoding speed, when you're dealing with a 7000 series card.

It's going to be all CPU, and a 6300 might be too slow.

hate to argue but there was a thing done w/ different cards and different cpu's. i forgot who did it maybe anandtech or someone but the video card made alot of difference. if i run across it ill post it.

Only the 8500/8600 and 2400/2600 cards have GPU assisted H.264 bitstream decoding.

IIRC, with the 8800 and 1900/2900 series, you get CABAC offloading (and of course hardware IVTC / Deinterlace) and that's about it. Not to say that it doesn't make a difference (compared to full bitstream decoding). I'm surprised how much this partial assist does actually.

I stand corrected :D. However, I think my original hypothesis stands true. The 7900gt is pretty decent on decode assist, but his 6300 will definitely be too slow (according to Anandtech, who I generally trust). By that article even an 8800GTX isn't enough to keep from dropping frames when pared with an E6300

If only they had full decode assist on the 8800GTS! I could then have an affordable gaming card that pwns H.264 decoding! There is no one size fits all solution otherwise!

I've got an E6600 + 7900GT. CPU usage ranges from 60% to 100% during X264 1080P playback.
I use CoreAVC btw.

Probably the 8400 GS (http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=2qH&q=8400+gs&um=1&sa=N&tab=wf).
