Encoding text

I'm working on a DVD PAL project which have a lot of clips
with static text on them.

I did some test to achieve a good compromise between file
size and quality but I did not find a decent balance.

Does anybody have some hints (matrix, GOP, structure, etc)
that could save me the hassle of testing&testing&testing? :)

PS: I'm working with TMPGEnc 4 Express. All the sources are

I found a solution but...another problem too :mad:

I didn't realized I was doing all my test in VBR...

CBR 3000kb/s and everything is fine (quality&size) but
the last frame is really bad!

Why is that?

You want to be using VBR as before, the bits will get allocated more evenly. You didn't mention what DVD authoring program you're using, but how about forced subtitles? Also 3000 kb/s is a pretty low bit-rate, look around the text there is a lot of mosquito noise.

The frame I posted is the last one.

As I wrote CBR@3000 kb/s gives me a perfect result with a minimum file size (size is a metter in this project).

If I increase the kb/s I gain nothing, only bigger sizes, and the last frame still shows bad.

For the authoring question, I'm using Sony DVD Architect 4 but I cannot use subs because it lacks fine tuning (graphics is another matter).

TMPG 4 has only VBR CQ and actually I stopped doing test, deadline is around the corner. I simply skiped the problem adding 12 black frs at the end of every clip.
Anyway I'm still hoping in a definitive solution! :devil:

Have you tried the combination of AviSynth+QuEnc or AviSynth+HCenc, instead of TMPGenc?

You can do it easily by using software (GPL/free) like AVStoDVD (http://sourceforge.net/projects/avstodvd), FAVC or DVDFlick.

the last frames would have been good, as you were having trouble with the quality of the end frame.

Do you have access to the video without the text? You may get better compression by putting the text in a full-screen subtitle.

I'm not sure I've understood your comment. For a denitive solution I mean not a generic quality one.
In the encodings I did there is a lack of coherence bitween the last ending frame and all the others.
Maybe it's a software bug or maybe a wrong setting in the encoder. I haven't found what it is.
Anyway I post a random frame to compare with.

I'm using your word.

Adding black frames was logical and what I'd suggest.

To solve the problem without the workaround you should provide a sample for someone to work with and help determine what is at fault.

are you using closed GOPs? or possibly the last frame is falling on an I-frame? in that case you could turn scenechange detection on.

also, if the text at the bottom isn't moving at all, try turn off half-pel search for still picture parts - it'll save you tons of bits for the rest of the picture.
