Microsoft WM-DRM and IBX 11.0.6000.6324

This post introduces a new tool for uncovering the individual keys from Microsoft's DRM blackbox components ("IBX"), up to version 11.0.6000.6324. Lacking the source code to the extant programs, I can only offer this output of my own efforts.

To actualize fair use rights with the new IBX, first run 'mirakagi' which will enter the IBX keys into the FairUse4WM blackbox-keys.txt text file.
Next, you should use the attached version of FairUse4WM, 1.3Fix-2. This includes an important fix for a video corruption bug, often seen in scenes affording high compression.

If problems occur, please provide the program text. IBX versions after 11.0.6000.6324 are not currently supported.

This version should be capable of interfacing with both Windows Vista and Zune software versions.

Does this work on the upgraded (Windows Media Player) version for XP, I still have the old one (fair4use) working and really going strong. But it (windows media player) keeps asking me for an update/upgrade so should I do the upgrade and will this version work on the upgraded system?

vha: yes, it works on the latest update (11.0.6000.6324) for XP. As long as you update soon (before MS releases another update) you should be fine.

Speaking of revolution. Here's something for ya. Short, two min or less, porn clips locked with the DRM so you have to sign up an account on the releaser's porn site to get the key. Anyway around that or only two options is delete it or sign up for an account? I hope to give these twits the finger. I can see full length movies and songs, sure, especially if the artist gets a piece, but a short skit that is only profiting the releaser? O.o

BelGarion: At this forum, we only discuss acceptable "fair usage" of our media. You do not own the content in question and I highly doubt a judge will accept "giv[ing] these twits the finger" as fair use.

Please only use it on media you own. That said, technically FairUse4WM can decode practically any media as long as you have a license to play it (e.g. it plays in your Windows Media Player). Since you do not have a license to play the content, you are out of luck.

Thanks so much for this fix. I am purchasing a new system and have been worried about how I will get my legally licensed music to my new machine. (in one folder which had 7 bay city rollers tracks,all apart from 3 converted.i dont know why it didnt do them all first time).

Did you allow MS Media Player update its licence certificate... If so you just screwed your self... an update to the licence certificate was released some time this week once you allow it to install it doesn't change the version numbers, but it changes the encryption method in the Indiv02.key to not allow the program to recover the keys...

Found this out via a virtual machine... It will show up in the UI of the store you are using.... IE Napster after it scans your downloaded files and sees some w/o WMA Protection that were bought from Napster....

Some One Needs to make a wma UI that removes the Napster (and others) purchasing Water marks...

I am sure you purchased your own music, but these things get lost sometimes. Or possibly all of your media is actually already yours. Try what this gentleman has done:

vha2581: I am a current URGE user, who recently began testing Rhapsody, and I can say with 100% confidence that FU4WM works.

This is because Rhapsody includes legacy support for WM-DRM (go to Tools | Preferences | My Library, and click on the radio button next to "Download tracks to my hard drive whenever possible", and the nested radio button for WMA). FU4WM should use your same keys, and all should work well.

One caveat: FairUseCommander says it can't identify the service provider (not a big deal, but just thought I should mention it).

Are you using Napster as your dl client? The problem with mine is that none of the songs will convert. And when I double click on a song I don't get that username/pass box, (but I know what you are referring to) but it plays the songs correctly.

at the time i was a member of wanadoo music club and also msn music and both used the same software to download and manage the downloads.
you only get the username and password box if you DONT have the license on your computer (if the songs plays,then you must have the license).
The problem with mine is that none of the songs will convert.
what type of music files are you trying to convert? are they drm-wma files? it also might have something to do with the wmp version you are using too.

I have been using FairUse4WM 3 fix 2 for a long time. Today, I got a pop up saying a security upgrade was required. Every since entering this security upgrade, I get the following error when trying to use FairUse4WM:

C:\Documents and Settings\Laptop\My Documents\My Music\My Yahoo! Music\MIA\Kala\03-0 - MIA - Boyz.wma does not appear to be licensed to you.

I have run mirakagi several times to create the blackbox-keys.txt file.

I also cannot play the WMA protected files in WMP any more like I used to could

OK OK so you have been in a fish bowl for most of your teenage life. Believing that all is well and now that the Napster & kazaa era is over, nobody cares if you try to take intellectual rights away from their respective owners.


Here is the reality of your dream you fallowed the install prompt just like so many before and ended up with malware (MW).

This type of MW is not made by MW most distribution company's hell bent on taking you and you computer for a processor meltdown. No this type steals your intellectual rights to the property that you once owned...

Remove all the Files that you have attempted play on and delete the install folder of WMP and The DRM folder... after a rollback of course. And start over re buy everything that you deleted...

Its the proverb as old as time its self tear it of quick and keep going... Its only a band aid after all...

I use Yahoo Music. On Wednesday, I was streaming songs - and a pop up comes on my screen which says "security update required to hear this song" - or some such non-sense. Unwisely, I accepted to install. However, I also subsequently found out that you have to install this security upgrade - or you can't listen to music with Yahoo Music. Deepprpl: The simple answer is that you need a license to play content and to remove it. Typically, running it through your licensor of choice (playing it with Windows Media Player) should be enough. On the off chance that you still can't get it to work, even after running Mirakgi, try playing the song WHILE unDRM'ing it, or unDRM it shortly after playing, that tends to work. I use all of those with the exception of Yahoo, so maybe someone who is familiar can help with that.

First off let me say I don't agree with your choice of music but crap happens right...

use fairuse4wm to acquire the keys... if it then fails to decrypt them then try Mirakgi to acquire the keys...

Plz note this only works with *.wma/*.wmv type files media player 10/11 xp/vista...

Now if you are using a subscription service with Rhapsody or Yahoo music... They don't allow full access to the keys in other words you have to be online in order to play them...

As for it locking up on you to install the certificate in order to play them

Convert them to *.MP3 as fast as you can otherwise WMP once played will see that it was a *.wma that was DRMed and try to replace the missing info... 9ie The certificate you installed...)

Ajax_undone: WMP doesn't try to replace the cert. Once it's unDRM'd, it won't try to do anything with it. It'll treat it like the other file, and your music store of choice will even recognize that the file is in the library. (mp3 conversion isn't needed, but is useful if desired--YourNameHere's tool (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1039081#post1039081) is quite useful for automatic conversion).


And I dunno about Yahoo!, but I know Rhapsody doesn't require you to be online for unDRM'ing to work.

Sorry but under the tests that I have run to leave the file in wma type is stupid... The Music *store name* dose update to your music library and when it finds a files with the publisher labeled *store name* It will attempt to match it with previously purchased or rented content to validate that it was indeed theirs and with a little warning box it will say

You click yes it will replace the certs if you say no it won't but you will no longer be able to play that file in WMP

(it will be marked as the licence is missing and wont play)

(ie transferred to the I.BOX file when played)

then it means that they are not being stored in the I.Box some other file exists on the Comp-bot that gives access for the I.box file to collect them.
Someone needs to run a system logger to find out where it pulls the keys from...

I get that occasionally in URGE, WMP11 under WinXP, but it's never caused me troubles. The store ID and License ID are still there, but it doesn't attempt to update any unDRM'd songs--only refresh the licenses for songs that have not yet been liberated.

If you don't believe me, test it for yourself. There's no store in the world that could get away with trying to re-DRM your files.

As for Yahoo! Music and Rhapsody, I believe they rely on the same principles as the other music stores (I know for a fact that Rhapsody does). The keys aren't only accessible when the music plays, and the blackbox doesn't really "do" anything except give your private key to unlock the content.

And plus, we know how WMDRM works (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WMDRM#How_it_works) (technical (http://cryptome.org/ms-drm.htm)). If I get the time, I'll mess with Yahoo! Music, but unless there's something I'm missing, it should work the same way.


(Thought: Is Y! Music like Rhapsody, in that it streams whenever possible? If so, try to download the tracks, and then play in Windows Media Player. All Janus-DRM'd songs should play in WMP... if it plays and you still can't un-DRM, there's an issue).

I was able to rollback to WMP 10.00.00.3646, and get everything working again. I then upgraded to 11.0.5721.5145 via a local executable.

Unfortunately, individualizing via http://services.wmdrm.windowsmedia.com/indivSite now performs an update to IBX version 11.0.6000.7000.

Unless someone knows of a way to perform individualization other than the site above, it appears to me that he only option is to rollback to version 10 until an update to mirakagi is available.

You should uninstall WMP 11 and then delete DRM directory which usually is in C:\Documents and Settings\All users\
Then install WMP 9. You should now have lower version and FairUse4WM will start working.

I'd recommend rolling back to WMP 10 if you've been hit with this.

Okay but isn't possible ( I don't want to test it :)). To just rollback to WMP 9/10 invidualize your IndivBox.key to 11.59-something version and then install WMP 11? I think it should use existing version and not install future one :)

i had reinstalled a fresh copy of winxp sp2 and got updated to wmp11 with the 6000.7000 ibx. so i uninstalled it and the runtime and deleted the drm folder and installed wmp9 then individualized (my ibx version is now 11.0.5497.6285) and then upgraded to wmp11 v11.0.5705.5043 and everything is working great

I knew someone would say that, but I indeed have FairUse4WM working with the lastest IBX.

All you need to do is proceed with a supported version of IBX. Once you get the required keys in blackbox-keys.txt, the same keys can be used with IBX 11.0.6000.7000. At least that's what I did and it worked.

I ran mirakagi a couple of days ago, with IBX 11.0.6000.7000, and surprising it added a few more keys to blackbox-keys.txt. I now have a total of 10 keys in my blackbox-keys.txt, which is not quite normal. I wish I had saved the results, as I'm not able to duplicate them now.

It's normal that your blackbox-keys.txt file works with FairUse4WM since this file contains "old keys" that work with your "old files". If mirakagi did extract any keys it means it did extract "wrong version" of the "old keys" but you still don't have a "new key" the one that you did get with 11.0.6000.7000. If you will now download/buy any file. It will be "secured" using the "new key" so FU4WM will not decrypt this file :)

I'm not entirely sure of the details, but the new version of IBX (11.0.6000.7000; the one you have) does some sort of obfuscation of the drm folder and stores the key in some other way. I'm sure someone else on this forum knows the details.

I ran into the same issue when I started experimenting with these DRM removal tools. You would need to downgrade your IBX to use that tool, or use one of the other methods (drmdbg + FreeMe2 or drmdbg + unDRM) that works with IBX 11.0.6000.7000.

This is odd, but very happy for me. I updated the Zune software on my desktop (Vista Ultimate) and was surprised that it didn't upgrade IBX to .6000.7000, like you just noted.

I had previously tested the last version of the Zune installer on an XP Pro virtual machine and found that it upgaded the IBX to .6000.7000. I wonder why they would remove that feature in the installer.

I was a "Happy Camper" with Rhapsody and WMP 11 beta 2.
My IBX was version 11.0.5497.6285
Rhapsody has forced an update on me and I reluctantly tried to install it after not being able to find how to decline the update and use my present version of Rhapsody.
The install kept hanging on the "SDK patch" install.
I finally updated WMP to the current version 11 with an IBX version of 11.0.6000.7000.
Rhapsody then installed.
Needless to say, I have not been able to get fairuse4wm to work with the "New" Rhapsody. I have the latest version of fairuse4wm plus mirakagi in the "Coolstuff" Package.
Rather than keep spinning my wheels, has anyone been able to remove DRM from the Forced Rhasody update downloads? I am still running XP SP2 with all the updates.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have read and posted to threads on the subject of DRM removal. I find it very presumptuous of you to assume that I am a person who goes "Ready, Fire, Aim". My hope was that someone had found a way around the forced Rhapsody update.

As far as I know, milOtis is the only user who claims to have FU4WM working properly with IBX 11.0.6000.7000. However, theres an entire thread here discussing the fact that this is not possible. Draw your own conclusions.

To make this clear for you, the answer to your question is that you need to use the latest version of drmdbg in combination with either freeme2 or drm2wmv (and optionally automation scripts/utils, and asfbin for reindexing as needed). Where you get your content from doesn't matter (Rhapsody or otherwise), your IBX version is what determines the toolset necessary for DRM removal.

Apparently no one claims to be successful except mil0tis as you stated.
I was hoping there would be a fix because I became very addicted to fairuse4wm and did not want to learn a new system, especially if it involves not having a convenient GUI interface.
As others have probably found, WMP 11 is not the problem with Rhapsody. I rolled back to WMP 10 and had not removed the DRM folder before I did it and found Rhapsody worked great with WMP 10. The only problem was when I checked the DRM folder, there was IBX 11.0.6000.7000!
I removed the DRM and updated my player and got the old IBX back but then Rhapsody wouldn't run without doing an upgrade.
I have followed the references you gave me and I keep hitting a dead end of files no longer available.
If you or some other member could reference a tutorial (or write one) on how to find and use the latest version of drmdbg in combination with either freeme2 or drm2wmv, you would be doing a great service to us all.

In my past few posts I have been trying to find a way to use Rhapsody with IBX Version: 11.0.6000.7000.
This is because to accept the Rhapsody update, you end up with IBX Version: 11.0.6000.7000 installed in your DRM folder.

I may have stumbled upon a fix, I'm not going to try to duplicate it, but see if it works for you.

Here is what I accidentally stumbled on that seems to work.
1. Accept the forced Rhapsody update.
2. Open the control panel/add remove software. Remove every reference, including updates, that references WMP 11 and roll back to WMP 10
3. After rollback, check the DRM folder. If IBX Version: 11.0.6000.7000, Delete the DRM folder and upgrade as published many times in this forum. If IBX Version: 11.0.5497.6285,
leave it alone.
4. Without deleting the DRM folder, upgrade WMP10 to WMP 11.
I had a copy of WMP11 beta2 that I used. WMP11 final might also work but I don't want to take a chance disturbing my setup now.:)
5. Check to see if Rhapsody 4 will open.
6.If it opens check the DRM folder and if the version is before IBX Version: 11.0.6000.7000; then mirakagi and fairuse4wm should work as before.

I'm going to try that if I get up the nerve haha, I have the same issue where Rhaspody is prompting me to update. I currently have a workable IBX (I forgot what it is right now) and Zune working with fairuse right now, so I might just uninstall Rhaspody and go with Zune Marketplace at least that way the songs I purchase can stay on my zune. As MilOtis stated earlier in another thread (I feel for you bro, I think this is like the second time you've been banned), it does seem like you have to baby your computer for fairuse to continue to work. I'm about to buy another computer for seperate use and use fairuse for my music purchases.

Apparently no one claims to be successful except mil0tis as you stated.
I was hoping there would be a fix because I became very addicted to fairuse4wm and did not want to learn a new system, especially if it involves not having a convenient GUI interface.
As others have probably found, WMP 11 is not the problem with Rhapsody. I rolled back to WMP 10 and had not removed the DRM folder before I did it and found Rhapsody worked great with WMP 10. The only problem was when I checked the DRM folder, there was IBX 11.0.6000.7000!
I removed the DRM and updated my player and got the old IBX back but then Rhapsody wouldn't run without doing an upgrade.
I have followed the references you gave me and I keep hitting a dead end of files no longer available.
If you or some other member could reference a tutorial (or write one) on how to find and use the latest version of drmdbg in combination with either freeme2 or drm2wmv, you would be doing a great service to us all.

you need to use the latest version of drmdbg in combination with either freeme2 or drm2wmv (and optionally automation scripts/utils, and asfbin for reindexing as needed). Where you get your content from doesn't matter (Rhapsody or otherwise), your IBX version is what determines the toolset necessary for DRM removal.

Obviously lossless software gives better quality and works faster.... but there are lots of users who will use lossy software instead, because they

won't download potentially risky software from file sharing services,
won't use CLI applications
won't spend time on installing a fresh copy of WinXP
won't be able roll-back Windows Media Player

I'm curious why you would use SoundTaxie over Tunebite. The only thing I remember about SoundTaxi was it blue-screening a rock solid stable XP machine when I used it. I when I did google searches, I found people were having the same or similar problems... just very bad programming I guess.

The 'lossy' DRM removal tools that are available don't actually remove DRM from your file. What they do is play your file, capture the analog audio during playback, and create a new file. Its a digital -> analog -> digital conversion, and can be of noticibly lower quality. Of the possible ways to remove DRM, this is the poorest choice available.

I guess I don't understand why so many people are having so much trouble with this. I know FU4WM was a great tool. Unfortunately, it appears at this point to be abandonware. We all need to acknowledge this and move on. Why bother downgrading to a previous IBX when there are currently other tools that work with the current version? It's a lot more work (and risk to your system) than simply learning a new tool.

I know people are going to do what they think is easiest for them, but for the newbies out there who may be getting confused, there is absolutely no reason to downgrade, mess with files, or anything like that. You can if you want, and alot of people seem to want to, but you're likely just causing yourself more headaches than necessary if you go that route.

It actually makes me wonder if there isn't a campaign of misinformation going on in an attempt to confuse people into thinking this is just way too complex and either giving up, or going with a lossy solution.

This is really very simple, theres no reason to make it any more complex than it has to be.

It is not a D-A-D conversion unless its going through a DAC. In other words, unless you are running a cable from an output to an input.

I think its about the same, I really hate tunebite, sometimes it make songs song like they are almost in a different key. I've heard that you can improve the quality if you have a better sound card but as your question goes I haven't noticed any difference.

If you are using FairUse4WM-1.3Fix-2 and Mirakagi, it should work. I am using WMP 11 beta 2 with "Indivbox.key" 11.0.5497.6285. I know it works with Rhapsody 4.
I am also running Windoze XP SP2.

I *love* the new 12/25/07 drmdbg :-). I can use it and drm2wmv on songs individually. I have downloaded Automate unDRM but I get the following error when I try to use it:

Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file

It's not a problem with WMP playing the file (in general). It plays fine under drmdbg and extracts the keys

Any ideas? What automation utility do you use?

So I think I'm in a bit of a bind here.. upgraded to WM11 because I wanted to be able to stream divx to my XBox 360. Now I try to unencumber some Napster tracks (haven't tried this in months..) and the old standby of fairuse4wm and mirakagi don't work.

WMP version is 11.0.5721.5230
Napster version is 3.8.1.4 (latest, as of now)

Is there any way to make this all work together? I don't want to lose the capability to stream to my xbox..

It's been a while since I've set drmdbg up, and I'm having a little trouble getting it to work the way it used to for me. Do I need to go back to WMP10 for this (I've got WMP11 now). I'm using Windows XP (in a virtual machine).

Does it need vista? I'm using XP with WMP rolled back to 10 and the "new" IBX .6324. When I launch the app and hit Multi Scan, it opens the first file and plays it. I can close the WMP window and I get a key in the drmdbg window and then it plays the second song. If I close this WMP window, it closes the drmdbg app too.

I've run drmdbg Multi Scan and it's gone through and gotten keys from all of the files. Then I would run DecryptIt from Automate Undrm 2.0. Do I need a specific version of WMP10?

hmm.. Tried this new version on Windows Vista and Media Player 11, and actually got SID keys through DRMDBG... But when i try to use this new key through freeme2, the song that is outputed winds up being 2 seconds of random noise. The previous versions of drmdbg dont even get my keys anymore, so at least this is a wonderful good start. if you need more techincal information to help diagnose, just ask. :thanks:

I think that's a little farther than I have gotten. What version of the IBX stuff are you using? I thought for a while I had the newer .6324, but it's actually something like .8004, which I don't think this new version even supports.

When I get a moment, I'm going to try reinstalling everything from scratch...

I did have the new .6324, but when i deleted the "DRM" folder, and re-individualized, the ibx went back to good o' 11.0.6001.8000. But something for me is obviously wrong, since the keys i get are wrong.. I havent heard of this new .8004 version, did it come in an update from the program you buy songs from?
Edit: Just tried getting the keys from another song, and the SID turned out to be the same as the other song, which is definitly a problem, since every song has a different SID.. hmm.. does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm using Microsoft Zune Marketplace, and I don't believe you can even play drm protected music on a computer without the IBX components being updated to >.8000. Tried many programs posted in this board, fresh windows installs, etc but nothing works. Until a computer scientist can come up with something, everyone's stuck. Sucks.

Oh, well; guess it was a good thing I put my newest Digital Copy file on my laptop. This drmdbg & FreeMe2 took care of my older Digital Copy & Amazon Unbox files (all purchased) on my Vista Home Premium desktop which still had .6324; but the newer Digital Copy on my Vista Home Basic laptop wouldn't give up its keys. That's fine with me; I just wanted to move the pre-laptop Digital Copy files to the laptop since my desktop can play the original Blu-ray--moving the Unbox files too was icing on the cake. (I freed my earlier WM-DRM files with the last incarnation of Mirakagi/FairUse4WM; I use the "sly" ;) way to crack BD/BD+ DRM.)
