i have an ATi HDTV wonder for my OTA HD content needs, and i use the bundled software to capture video off it. i am interested in find out what some of the limitations of it are. for one, i want to know if this software can capture 720p60? i have tried to capture it on my 720p channel (ABC in Philly), but it always comes out as 29.97fps. i think the software just automatically converts the stream to 29.97 no matter whether it is 1080i, 720p, or 720p60. is there any way to get around this? i know you can use other software, and i tried one once (cant remember the name) but i didnt really like it much (which is not to say that i am in love with ATi's software  ). is the card itself capable of capturing 60fps? any help is appreciated.

:thanks:

I would think it would be harder to have it convert the native 720p 60fps stream into a 29.97 fps one. An HD capture card's job is fairly simple when it comes to capturing video. Just tune the channel and send it off to the system for writing to the HDD (and also perhaps decoding and displaying). If your captured file from a 720p channel comes out as 29.97 fps, then chances are there is some sort of intermediate transcoding going on, which you probably don't want (at least, not on the fly). I've never owned an ATi capture card, so I can't say for sure what is going on, but in theory it should have no trouble capturing the native 720p 60fps video.

I have the ATI HD card and it does capture 720p60.

Make sure you export "HD MPEG2" from the library. It will do a raw dump and add mpeg headers. It does no transcoding using "HD MPEG2". If you export it as anything else it will convert to 29.97.

Some decoders will automatically convert to 29.97fps. It could by your software player changing the frame rate. Try turning off the deinterlace options.

Example to check: Download Don Graft's program DGIndex. Open your video. In the menu, click: Video --> Field Operations --> Ignore Pulldown Flag. Then: File --> Preview. Look at the frame rate in the Information box. It will be 59.94.

Or download the trial of VideoRedo Plus. Open the HD video. Then using the menu: "Tools --> Show Video Program Info".
It will say:
File Type: PS - MPEG-2
Dimensions: 1280x720
Frame Rate: 59.94 FPS
Aspect Ratio: 16/9
Profile: Main/High
Chroma: 4:2:0

well, let me say that i always used the hd mpeg2 save option, but i still cannot get 720p60. i checked this by using vdubmod. in any case, i'm not really worried about it too much, it must just be that whenever i record some hdtv on my 720p channel that they are broadcasting at 29.97fps. o well, thanks for the help.

I have the ATi HDTV wonder too and use J. River Media Center 11 (not 12) to schedule/capture HDTV programs.
I'm not sure about ATi's software since I haven't used it for a long time, but JR Media Center 11 was more stable than ATi's when I started using the card.
Besides, I remember I had problems converting HDTV programs to XviD files or simply making them readable by other players without encoding in a low resolution.
