Hi, first post here...
Ive been trying all damn day to encode a DVD to avi using super.
I originally created the DVD by playing an old VHS tape thru a DVD recorder. That works fine and I get a normal unprotected DVD. About 5 VOB files.
I then used DVDdecrypter to get that set of files onto my hard drive. No problem so far.
But then I used super to convert to divx avi. and no matter what aspect ratio I tried I get like a double screen effect when I play the resulting avi using avsplayer or media player. Its like two exactly the same screens side by side playing at once.
If I try to open the 1st VOB file in Virtualdub I get:
cannot detect file type of "F:\video_TS\VTS_01_1_VOB"
Virtualdub DOES iopen the 2nd vob but again I get two screens side by side.... huh? Other captured VHS dvds have worked fine in the past.
Can anyone assist please?

thnx for the help. heres the screen shot.
This is of a 2nd converted VHS tape done exactly the same way. I let super create about 11Mb of the avi then cancelled it to get the avi for gspot.
I have included a screen dump of what avs player sees too.
I did note this time when DVDdecrypter converted the dvd to the hard drive it came up with an error message "On-the-fly IFO/BUP file patching failed"
i cancelled the dialog box and it said all was successful but obviously summat failed. Could this be the problem?

You should just use ImageShack (http://imageshack.us) to host your images. Then you (we) wouldn't have to wait potentially a very long time for your attachments to get "approved." :p

@faminz
According to GSpot, the sample has a corrupt .AVI header. Perhaps the program "Super" is at fault. (I'm not personally familiar with "Super")
Try using "MPEG Mediator" instead of "Super"...
BTW - Did you play both the actual DVD and the DVD Decrypter-transferred hard drive version of the DVD? - so that you can determine whether the problem is with "Super", or any earlier step...

Yep I did play the source dvd and the transferred dvd and both play fine. Then, by all means, try "MPEG Mediator" instead of "Super"...

it fails on that first VOB. says no MPEG-Video stream!
Beats me... may have to start again from the source DVD.

it fails on that first VOB.1) What is the "name" of the .VOB (e.g. "VTS_01_0.VOB", or similar)? If it IS a .VOB whose name ends in "0.VOB", you should not include it in the files you add in "MPEGMediator".
2) If it's a .VOB that ends in a number other than "0" (e.g. "VTS_01_1.VOB"), this would be the second indication that you're dealing with corrupt information

As indicated in the gspot image it does end in a 1. So maybe there IS corruption. However, I would expect a corrupted file to not convert at all. This one does convert but gives two screens side by side. Thats a little specific for a corruption dont you think? Also I have tried it on two separate conversions now from two tapes and both do the same.
Id therefore rule out corruption of the source DVD. However in both cases the DVDdepcrypter ended up with a dialog saying "on-the-fly IFO-BUP file patching failed" before finishing and then saying all files converted successfully!! So maybe the vob on the hard drive has some glitch. I have re-installed the latests DVDDecrypter and tried again but same occurs.
To test if DVDdecrypter isnt doing its job properly I now need an alternative to DVD decrypter to get the vobs onto the hard drive I think. suggestions?

Your original DVD contains NO copy protection. Therefore, there's no need to use DVD Decrypter just to copy it to your hard drive.
Simply use Windows Explorer to "drag and drop" to your hard drive.
This will eliminate DVD Decrypter (although I really doubt it's involved in your problem) from the equation...
Also, now that I think of it, if you load the ORIGINAL DVD into "MPEG Mediator", do you get the same error?Id therefore rule out corruption of the source DVD.YOU might "rule that out", I certainly wouldn't. Over MANY years, in the wonderful world of computers, I've learned that NOTHING can be ruled out, other than by a careful process of elimination in the environment of a well-controlled experiment ;>}

you are absolutely correct setarip. One variable at a time and eliminate everything.
I have bought a new dvd rewriter and copied the vob file onto the hard drive (thus I still havnt reburnt the DVD from tape again yet - thats next) and tried again.
the mpegmediator says " no MPEG video stream",
SUPER still creates a side by side avi.
I have gone back to 3 other older dvd's that worked before and done the same procedure and I get the same result from super. So I am (I think) focussing on the conversion software - yes?
The DVD's AND the copied VOBs play just fine in a dvd player.
Id like to use something other than super but as I said mpegmediator doesnt appear to work. Do I need ALL the files from the disk into a folder for that?
The copied VOBs however now dont show a corrupt header in GSpot (so thats progress) I assume because of the new hardware.

I running out of ideas here and getting very frustrated (with my problem not with this forum..)
any more ideas please?

When accessing the Image Shack GSpot screen capture that you've posted, I'm unable to enlarge it - and I'm unable to clearly make out all of the information.
However, from what I CAN see, it appears that you ".VOB" file is not in typical "DVD-ready" format.
This appears to be further supported by your statement regarding attempting to laod it into MPEG Mediator, to wit: mpegmediator says " no MPEG video stream"...

It is clearly not a free software. It is also completely irrelevant to this thread.

all sorted thnx..
I got the DVDFab HD Decrypter software and tried that and Voila.
It copies the VOBs perfectly to hard drive in a form that SUPER can then convert to avi.
Ive not changed anything else so I assume theres something funny about the tape to DVD copy that means without the decrypter copying I get the wierd side by side videos.
Well I do from DVDDecrypter AND from simple copy and paste, but DVDFab seems to sort it.
I DO wonder why but at least its now working.
Thnx for the tips and help.
