I encoded a 50min episode into x264 and merged it into matroska.
The problem is this: When I play the video, it looks like the screen is refreshing poorly. I can see quick horizontal "cuts" in the video, which make the picture look like it was cut in two pieces vertically. This happens especially when a scene changes and when there's fast movement on the screen. I don't think I noticed this before, when watching the series on DVD, but I'm not sure if it was before or after I reinstalled WindowsXP, which was yesterday. Now that I played back the .VOB's, I could also spot this weird effect. I tried playing back the DVD again and I sort of think its still there, but I'm no longer sure whether the glitch is in my head or in the actual video...
I also tried Xvid and didn't notice any difference in regard to this particular issue.
I think the video on DVD is compressed pretty poorly too, because in some scenes certain parts look pixelated, and there's a constant noise hovering around the background. I did notice this when viewing on TV too. I used noise filters successfully to reduce it, but the "refresh glitches" are still there. I tried kernel deinterlace and field deinterlace, but they didn't have any effect. The picture does not look interlaced when viewing it frame by frame in GK or DGIndex.
Could this be due to bad codecs? I used VLC to play the video. Could it be a display driver issue? My display driver is Forceware 94.24 for nVidia GeForce 7600gs (if my memory serves me right).
