How to convert my DVDs to iPod 5.5gen compatible files?

Hi all

Sorry if this is a really obvious question, but can somebody please tell me which free software I can use to convert my DVDs to play on my 5.5 gen video iPod? In particular, I have Friends on DVD and wanted to play on my iPod. I have been searching the forum, and a lot of people refer to evaluation programs, which leave watermarks, or are restrictive in other ways. Is there any free programs around which do a good job too?
