codec error - no dialog on playback

Lately I have been having trouble playing some downloaded videos. I can hear the background audio sounds, but, the dialog is missing. wmplayer reports "error downloading codec" but how do I find out which codec?

Gspot reports the latest tested file as:

DivX Style "packed bitstream" AVI

and in user data section:

DivX504b1393p
XviD0046

but both XviD and DivX codecs are installed.

Any troubleshooting ideas?

Nope, can't help with anything downloaded, with narrow exceptions. See rule 6 on every page, as well as this announcement (http://forum.doom9.org/announcement.php?f=6). Encode from your own DVDs and everything should work out.
