View Full Version : HDV 1440x1080 PAR?

I have bought myself a Canon HV20 camcorder which records in HDV format. I live in Sweden so this camera records at 25 fps 1440x1080i but it can also record to 1440x1080P at 25 fps and normal PAL DV format at 720x576.

My question is how to correctly resize HDV to DVD. I know that DVD use 720x576 but the actual picture area is 702x576 pixels. The PAR of an anamorphic 16:9 PAL DVD is 1.459.

However what is the correct pixel aspect ratio of HDV? I have seen somwhere that it use a PAR of 1.33. If this is correct then I should resize to 702x576 and add black 9 pixels borders on left and ride side to make it 720x576 for correct DVD resizing. So then it is not correct to resize 1440x1080 directly to 720x576?

This makes me a little bit confused... Perhaps I just should make a perfect circle on a paper and then use the camcorder and record to HDV and see if it is perfectly round if resized to 1920x1080. And then see what how it looks on my TV when converted to DVD using 702x576 vs 720x576. But it is interesting to know how it should be if everything was made according to the standards...

That is a pretty good idea, and that's what I have suggested several times - but years ago, and in conjunction with SD, not HD.

I tried that method myself, but instead of a circle you should use a square: it's easier to measure!

I think you'll find that most movie DVD's have the image encoded to fill the entire 720 pixel width these days!

This is pretty useful, as newer TV's and DVD players are fitted with HDMI connections and don't loose any of the image to over-scan - unlike analogue (composite, S-video and component) connections do.

If you feel like doing a test... I'll play your MPEG-2 1440x1080 capture in my hardware player to see how round it is ;)
