View Full Version : Burned DVDs don't play on standalone players (due to Vista)?

I'm having an odd problem now that I've upgraded from XP to Vista. Previously, I was able to burn files to DVD for viewing on television without too much trouble: Re-encode from xvid/mp3/avi to mpeg2 using quenc and avisynth, assemble in tmpegenc DVD author, and burn with ImgBurn. They always worked fine in standard DVD players.

I've since upgraded to vista, and now I have a problem. I've been using the same process, and the DVDs I burn playback just fine on my computer. The problem is that standalone DVD players (I've tried 3) reject the disk as invalid or unplayable. I've tried a variety of burning tools on vista: The built in one, ImgBurn, DCBurnerXP, Nero 6, tmpegenc builtin DVD writer, and all of them produce the same results.

I'm burning to single-layer DVD-Rs, with a BenQ DW822A, and I've been using the same stack of taiyo yuden's both before and after the vista upgrade.

Is there some tool I can use to check for the presence/absence of whatever it is that makes standalone players accept the DVDs as valid?

Welcome to Doom9. Do you verify your burns? Have you done a PIPO scan? Yudens are the very best there are and if you use ImgBurn (www.imgburn.com), it will ensure structure is OK.

Check your DMA is on on all channels.

You may wish to post an ImgBurn or Ner0 log.

@ SecretFire

Hi!The problem is that standalone DVD players (I've tried 3) reject the disk as invalid or unplayable. If you NOW try to play some of your older, successful burned DVDs on these standalone players, do they play?

Okay, this is bizarre: I just burned another disc with IMGburn (to get a log), and this time, for whatever reason, it worked. Bizarre. During my debugging, I've been burning two different videos. Video A I burned many times with the different programs, but video B I only tried once using one tool (tmpgenc) and when the first try didn't work, I just assumed it would fail like the others.

Basically, my thinking now is the only thing broken is my encoding of video A and tmpegenc's writing tool. I'm goign to try video A again and see what happens.

Anyway, here's a imgburn log form the good dvd:

Here's the scan of the bad disc (video B)

And this one is the good disc I just burned

I just burned video A again (same encoding) and it worked. New theory: One of the failing writing tools borked the drivers in a subtle way that disappeared after a reboot.

Anyway, since I've effectively coastered about 8 disks at this point, I think I'm going to call it a job well done and move on.

The "bad" disk has just about the lowest quality number I have seen on a Taiyo Yuden disk. The good one is OK, but still lower than than 95 and 98+ we usually see.

Note there is a firmware update for your burner - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1832

I 20:37:32 Source Media Type: DVD-R (Book Type: DVD-R) (Disc ID: TYG02) (Speeds: 2.4x, 4x, 8x)Perhaps I'm way out in left field but, as far as I know the only media that have 2.4X speed are rewritables and D/L.

I recall that a while ago there were postings about fake T-Y media...

adding to the previous two posts and a lot of googling

from what I can tell the previous firmwares had issues
