merging one DVD's menus with a new avi

Please excuse me if this is not the right Forum for this question, but I think it is.

I have a DVD with nice backgrounds and menus that I like quite well. Unfortunately, there is something corrupted on the disc because the movie itself does not play smoothly. It will play for a while but eventually start moving jerkily, then freeze altogether.

I also have this same movie on laserdisc, and I have successfully used a Canopus ADVC300 analog->digital converter plus a Canopus ADVCIO firewire card added to my PC to convert the laserdisc output into an .avi file on my hard drive.

I would love to be able to extract the menus (and subtitles) wholesale from the old DVD and glue them onto a new one that I burn myself with my ripped .avi file. Is there software that can do this? Is it "DVD remake pro"? I imagine I might have to fine tune chapter breaks and subtitle timing. Are such things possible?

First you have to convert your captured DV movie into mpeg-2. You can use an inexpensive encoder like CCE Basic or the very good free encoder HC. A trial version of TMPGEnc would also work.

Then use MuxMan to author the dvd. You might need to demux the file if the encoder produced a .mpg file. You need a .m2v and .mpa or .ac3. You could export the chapter points from the old dvd using PgcEdit (if the ifo files are still readable) and then import them into MuxMan.

The last step would be to open the MuxMan created dvd files in PgcEdit and import the menus from the first dvd.

Might seem complicated if you never did it before but there are many helpful guides that explain the mpeg-2 encoding process, authoring, and using PgcEdit.


You might try your dvd in another drive or a friend's drive to see if it will read. A different drive might be able to copy the files.
